I have'nt played MystIV in over a year,so I thought I would play it again. When I left Haven I stroked the snake and rode back to
Tomahna and linked to Serenia, found the irrigation device, stroked the snake and nothing happens? I have repeated the procedure a
zillion times and nothing? I have gone and added the patches and still nothing; I don't remember this happening before, can anyone help!

Like you, I recently replayed Revelation after about a year's absence. I found that the snake puzzle in Haven was much easier to accomplish than in Serenia. It took me a number of attempts before I was successful. I took it very slowly, making sure that on each right to left stroke I kept well inside the bottom black stripe on the snake's body. After a few goes, it worked. Good luck.

It seems to be impossible with Xbox. I had to bypass in Haven but it is unavoidable in Serenia 2. Nothing seems to work. I am unsure how in runs on a PC however with Xbox the hand is "open" for perhaps 3/4 of the stroke (~1/2 of the stroke in Haven) I have spent hours and will most likely have to give up.

On a PC, we have to left click and hold the hand cursor before "petting" the snake.

Are you able to do something similar on XBox ?

Have you tried waiting for the hand to point (close) before starting your move from right to left ?

Thank you for the response. With xbox there is no mouse so a left click is impossible. Is the hand closed on a PC when you move right to left? the way it works on xbox is that on the right edge of the snake the hand opens. I then sweep to the left. At some point (but within the snakes body) the hand closes. I continue to the left. After I leave the snakes body I then move down, to the right, back up and repeat the process. So I am "touching" the snake only during the sweep. From your statement the hand is supposed to be closed? This confuses me because why would the hand open in the first place? Your help is greatly appreciated because all of the help I see is related to the PC and without being able to unlock the snake to turn the wheel the game is over for me.

I have been searching for a good XBox walkthrough for a few hours and have not found one.

I may have been misleading you with my "close hand cursor". I do not have Myst installed on my PC anymore and I speaking from memory only.
The hand would be like with the fingers pointed while stroking the Snake/Dragon.

I have found a rare hint from the Walkthrough by Coelho Buda.

Message to our expert players
Many of us sure would like to watch a video for the snake/dragon petting puzzle.

Again thank you for all the hard work. The RussII post which I cite below is quite interesting:

1) Start your sweep very close to the right edge of the snake.
2) Release the mouse key at the end of each sweep.
3) Sweep across the stripe, not to quickly.
4) You can sweep as many times as it takes, but when the software detects 4 good ones, the snake wakes up.

A hint to fix to Ubisoft: Have the hand change from 2 fingers tapping, to the open palm. It would help tremendously in knowing if the player is lined up and sweeping correctly.

With the xbox version once to get close to the right edge of the snake it does change to an open palm. Thus you feel you are "lined up" properly. As you sweep to the left the palm stays open but about 3/4 of the way across the stripe it changes to a two finger icon. And then I do as the maztec post states: I go down and back to the right to repeat the process. I do not go back and forth as the post suggests. I have 1) attempted total sweeps (starting with palm open and then closing to two fingers, 2) stopping the sweep as soon as the palm closes, and even 3)starting the sweep about 3/4 of the way to the left-in this case the palm is never open, its just the two fingers trying to mimic the PC version. Nothing has worked.

I guess I might be interested in, in regards to the PC version, why apparently you do not get an open hand like the xbox version. I realize there are variations in the software but a completely different icon does not make sense. I have no problem spending hours to figure it out but those hours were spent some time ago. I have actually had to give up. I spend about 1/2 hour a day trying variations because I would like to finish the game however one can only do so many things, ie. changing speed, attempting to stroke the complete stripe, fingertips on stripe only etc. I really can't think of anything else. It does not seem logical that one cannot find a thread on this related to the xbox since, to me, it is a serious issue, and I know I can't be the only one using xbox. Again your advice is greatly appreciated.

Suggestion:

Maybe you should try posting a question on a site where the players are all Xbox related.

Well since I am a hard-core Mac person I am currently seeing how Myst V runs on a mac. But what I find so interesting (but frustrating) is the fact that this is such a huge problem for me yet there appears to be no information on this topic. It is weird. Although the game is old there should be something out there. I recently emailed an author of one of the main walkthroughs in an attempt to get leads.

Yep, I am stuck at the Dragon puzzle. I did not like Myst 4 the first time I played it and it is even worst this time around,

I have a few remarks. The hand cursor stay in normal mode. What makes it so bad is that you have to make 4 good passes in a row over the black stripe.

I do not know how good the graphics are on a XBox but on a pc this puzzle is quite dark. Enough to make it worst.

I will show you an image that was quite enhanced and that black stripe is still not showing good. The hand cursor is not bad. We have no hints on how precise we have to be or how much time we are given for that puzzle.

Notice on my image that the sripe is not a straight black line and that there is a small curve at each end. The left side is very dark and it is a more a guessing game than anything else.

I have a very sensitive laser mouse and at this time, I am fooling around with different sensitivity settings to be able to find a more precise one.

Btw, I am not surprised at all that so few players have tried Myst 4 on a Xbox. I would not even recommand it on a pc.

After searching the web for a long time, I might have good news for you Musky.

I am not able to test it right now because I was so upset that I decided to go on with the game and come back later to the snake puzzle on my next visit to Serenia.

On Xbox, you must have a special button you use to grab something ? (same as a left click/hold on a pc)

Try using it for the dragon/black stripe puzzle. On a pc, when I do a left click/hold, the hand cursor will not grab(change shape) if/when I am over the black stripe

Now read the next quote for what could the magic potion and notice where you must begin and finish each "petting" (4 good one in a row).
The speed seems to be very important.

I did succeed with the snake petting.

I even had to do it three times.
1- The same snake puzzle in Haven, in the monkeys nest/hut as a practice run.
2- At the dam controls in Serenia but was not able to tap the snake/dragon on the head.(bug or intentionnal ???)
3- This third time was even easier. I followed the big spoiler in above post and used the palm of the hand cursor. I had to do it quite fast and kept petting (about 8 times) until the dragon did unroll itself.(speed seems to be most important)

I am hoping these infos will make it easier for all of you folks.

Success. But it somewhat different than the PC. As an example, from the jpeg you attached, where the hand is on the photo, on the xbox the hand is open. Let me describe it better.

If one starts on the right edge the hand opens. As you proceed to the left the palm remains open and then ~75% across the black line- from your photo the lines slopes up a little. At this point the hand closes. This is what really screwed me up. Plus with xbox there is really nothing to "click". How I got it to work is you must use the "grab" button or the "A" button on the control. What this does is it keeps the hand open as one goes across the entire line. And one can actually be quite sloppy about it. One apparently does not have to be anal as with the PC version. You can start off the right edge and go past the left age. The only thing you have to do is release the "A" button after each swipe which is similar releasing the left click on the mouse.

What is also interesting is that I can do it everytime in Serenia but I have yet to get it to work in Haven. It's bizarre.

Nanouk, I can't thank you enough for the help . Now Myst V only comes in the PC/Mac version which I will purchase shortly, even though I am a little paranoid about your feelings about IV on the PC. I have a Intel Mac and so I can run Mac and XP on the same machine so I will see. I ran the demo and it doesn't look too bad.
