That's what Catherine apparently says while we hear the memory for the dress hanging in Yeesha's room.

I have the subtitles turned on, and I can assure you that Catherine informs her daughter that she is to have a "special neckless." So...to repeat my question...Will Yeesha lose her neck? Tell me, what does a neckless Yeesha look like?

I know the story of how this game was rushed into production at the end, but no one has mentioned the lack of Quality Control between the script and the spoken lines.

Whenever you listen to someone speak a journal entry while you're reading it, there are many minor discrepancies - and a few that are more significant than others. While reciting the Spire journal, Atrus talks about seeing his grandmother's exhortation "become truth." But meanwhile the journal shows the words "come true." While Catherine speaks her journal to us, she says that Achenar never learned to appropriately channel his emotions. But actually she transposed the words she had supposedly written, which were shown as "channel his emotions appropriately."

Yeesha's written misuse of the English language (whose in place of who's) could possibly be excused within the construct of the story as being due to her age, I suppose. However, there was no NEED for there to be a usage error.

It's really all attributable to the need for a good proofreader.

Maybe the tech-savvy people notice problems with the game play. I'm sure the graphic artists notice where the quality of the design or the rendering is still rough. But I notice when language is misused and when what's spoken doesn't match what's written (and don't tell me to turn off the subtitles, because in general, as an editor, I find it easier to see words, not just hear them).

Sorry, I just had to vent.

You need to start the game in neckless mode to see yeesha without her neck.

Are you certain it is not about a necklace instead of neckless ? Angel

Btw, many of the staff members who worked on that projet were of french origine and might not have been "perfect" masters of the english language. Try the french settings at installation.

The actress portraying Yeesha in Myst 4 was Juliette Gosselin from the province of Québec in Canada and the game was created in Montréal.

See this YouTube video for some insigts...

realXCV, that gave me a good chuckle (although her neck *does* show there). Thanks!

nanouk, you are are jesting, I hope?

But you assume that those who prepared the subtitles did not have English as a first language? I had forgotten that point, but it might be the cause of the "Neckless TramDriver."

However, it does not excuse the cause of the disconnect between actor and journal. That is a case of one of the following:
1) the actors not reading their scripts accurately
2) The actor being given an earlier version of the text
3) the text being transferred inaccurately from script to graphics or vice versa
(or one of many other permutations)

Unfortunately my French isn't quite good enough (6 years of academic language instruction, but no cultural immersion...40 years ago!) to try playing in French.

I choose
4) The subtitles being created inaccurately from audio.

The neck is longer is standard mode.

I see that happen with movies and TV shows all the time. It's actually quite common, so no surprise that it would happen in games too.

I can only hope that the ending has not yet been written.

I use the subtitles or closed captioning for DVDs whenever it's available, and I've seen some ridiculous interpretations. Back when LOTR first was released someone posted the Engrish (I believe that's how it was spelled) subtitles for one of the foreign pirated versions and they were hilarious.

I had just never thought about it happening for a video game.
