There is a new version of Revelator available for download.

Revelator extracts sounds, movies, pictures, subtitles, and journals from Myst IV. Revelator 6.1 can now extract files from the game DVDs. If you don't have a full installation of the game on your hard disk, you can now extract everything from the DVDs instead. There is detailed soundtrack information now in the read-me document. Revelator 6.1 can be downloaded from http://homepage.mac.com/rshayter/Revelator.html.

My other Myst-related file extractor, Riveal, has also been updated. Riveal extracts sounds, movies, and pictures from several games in the Myst series: Myst, realMYST, Riven, and Myst III. Riveal 5.0 now extracts sounds and pictures from the original Windows version of Myst, extracts more pictures from Myst Masterpiece Edition, and extracts sounds from Myst III. The read-me document now includes more detailed soundtrack information, including information about Myst V and Uru, even though Riveal isn't needed for those games. Riveal 5.0 can be downloaded from http://homepage.mac.com/rshayter/Riveal.html.

I hope you like the new versions.

This is my first time here. I was wondering...why would you want to "extract"...sounds,videos,subtitles from a computer game???

If you're like me and you enjoy the music in Myst IV and you'd like to listen to it even while not playing the game, then you need to extract the music from the game's data files. In many games, the multimedia assets (music, sound effects, movies, pictures, and so on) are bundled into very large data files, often hundreds of megabytes in size. These data files are generally in a proprietary format that is unknown to popular music players, movie players, and picture viewers. That's where programs like Revelator come in. Revelator understands how to find the sounds, movies, and pictures within the data files and it can copy them into individual files so that you can listen to or watch or look at them at your leisure.

Personally, I'm mostly interested in extracting the music. I have the official soundtrack CD but it has only an hour of music on it. There is much more music that can be extracted from the game, including Peter Gabriel's Curtains which isn't on the soundtrack CD.

I should mention, in case it's not clear, that extracting files is non-destructive and perfectly safe. The game's data files are not modified. The only thing to be concerned about is disk space: if you want Revelator to extract absolutely everything from Myst IV, you'll need to have several gigabytes of disk space available for the copied files.
