Not sure what's going on but I actually had SHIV loaded and playing in the computer. Had problems and uninstalled. Tried to reinstall but now CD player won't read the disk - shows nothing in the drive. Drive will run other disks but not SHIV. Makes noises like it's trying to start but never goes beyond the first "grunt." Is it the disk or my drive?

I may have screwed up - sim is SH-WOTP.

Hello mstevens1963,

Glad to see you made it over to the new tech site.

Welcome.

Have you changed your DVD/CD-ROM drive lately.
Some drives cannot read this game. I had that happen to me. I switched drives from another computer and the Dvd could be read.

Actually, no I haven't changed it, it's the original drive put in the machine when it was built for me about a year ago. I've only ever had this happen once before, with another CD from Britain. I've noted the disks causing this problem are thinner than the FS2004, Sniper Elite or IL2 disks I use in the machine. Maybe the head can't quite reach up to the thinner disk. That doesn't explain how it read the disk and allowed play before, though.

I was thinking it was your drive. This Dvd has a type of copy protection in it that some Dvd players won't recognize. I think it is a Securom type protection.

But if that were true it would not have worked before, you would think.

I would try putting it in another computer and see what happens.

Greetings to all and welcome to the insanity!! Yesterday we took a long flight on FS9, and afterwards I pulled the SHWOTP CD out on a whim. It was bent slightly down when coming off the post in the box, although I squeezed it like you're supposed to. Inserted it as always and lo and behold the sim came up. It's now reloaded and working fine. Not sure how this happened but who's to question?

BTW who picked the voices for this sim? One of the guys has that same wound-up-to-the-breaking-point voice the XO had on "Down Periscope;" the other sounds like he's been taking some serious steroids!!

Glad you got it going MS. Crazy how it all worked all. Clap

Have fun and sink a few of the bad guys.

If you have any further question, just post back.

I should tell you that I tried starting it again after posting the last time. It acted up again. However, I visited the site and downloaded patch 1.4. Installed before running sim again. Also did a diagnostic. Restarted the sim and it worked better, with better graphics, than it ever has before. Outstanding!!! Excellent sim and in keeping with "Silent Victory" and RSRD the book and movie. Thanks again for this sim.
