GordieFreeman,
you seem to have lost your Half-Life 2 way to Far Cry? Wink

This sounds like the pdf is ok, but that your Acrobat Reader is way too old to properly work with the PDF.

On the Far Cry DVD (or on one of the CDs), there is a folder called: Support\Manual\, there you will find the latest Acrobat Reader to install, i.e. AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe

Try that...

AE-on, you rock my planet! Though there was no installer, there was the manual for the Far Cry Editor there. It works. Thank you so much!

As far as I know the editor on the CD, or in the game folders, is an older version...

I've downloaded the newer version, but am having the EXACT same problem as GordieFreeman... I use WinRAR also, and even downloaded it several times.

Hopefully it's that the Acrobat Reader isn't up to date... So I'll try installing the new version and see if that solves the problem.

It's definitely your acrobat reader version. I thought Freeman was getting the error in WinRar. Glad I asked for more details. Wink

Tim,

from reading the current PDF editor manual v1.0:

a) Could you please let folks mark and *copy* text parts out of the PDF in the next version? Currently this is not possible, making it a tad annoying, if you want to remember a few things via copy/paste.

b) A chapter called 'Getting started quickly' would be nice. E.g.:

- It took me something like 31 pages (39 PDF pages actually) to find out that you can *play* in the editor via Ctrl + G. (I still have to find the appropriate command in the menu Smile).

- It would be handy to mention the player respawn 'object' right in the first walkthrough IMO, along with Ctrl+G.

- Another wonderful thing would be to mention the map essentials, i.e. what does a map need (some terrain, respawn, some weapons,... etc.).

- I am not quite sure what preparations need to be made to make map editing fully work. At present other than the Dynamic Help not finding the Command-xxxx.htm files, AFAICT everything works? E.g. would unpacking certain files help speed up the editor.? Where do new custom resources like textures go? Things like that.

- Either an appendix or right in the quick start chapter, quickly explaining the meaning of all the toolbar icons, could be handy. A lookup so to speak.

- A frequently used shortcuts section and/or appendix might be useful as well. I have started this for myself, e.g.:

Ctrl + Fx Save position
Shift + Fx Load position

+,- Modify Terrain - Radius
/,* Modify Terrain - Height
Ctrl + LMB Modify Terrain - Sample Height
Ctrl + C Selected object(s) are cloned.

c) Some (nitpicking) tiny errors in the manual (AFAICT):

page iv - Navigation
- Saving a location is CTRL + Fx and not Shift + Fx. Recall position is SHIFT + Fx and not Ctrl + Fx.
- Page number "4" should be "iv", to be consistent with pages i, ii, and iii.

page 31
- 3. Set the fire alight: Save the position with Ctrl + F1 not Shift + F1
- 6. Make fire hurt: Recall the position with Shift + F1 not Ctrl + F1

d) Might save some typing and make the reading easier, to simply add an image of the appropriate icon in text, instead of long descriptions where the icon is placed, e.g. p19 the "link and unlink icons".

Hope this feedback is useful in some way.

Was fun driving in my very first crater map VeryHappy... but alas real geometry manipulation (like in Quake3Arena) seems to have gone the way of the dinosaurs, prefab/static mesh placement seems to have replaced it... sigh/snief Smile

Beside many screenshots in the v1.0 manual, there is a name given to it like Demo:AIPoint865 or DEMO: FobiddenArea_Island03.

What is this referring to?

Read the Introduction to the user manual! Big Grin

AE-on, I've already fixed those errors for v1.1, if you know of any more, let me know ASAP as I have submitted this and there probably won't be any more updates for a while. Your other ideas are interesting, and I will consider them, if I have the time. Thanks for your feedback. Smile

Ah yes, the Introduction. Finally one with some useful info. Wink

I found the answer now. Sorry about that! I usually skip Intros as they usually are all fluff. Wink

Tim,

a few more suggestions, again nothing big, but maybe of some use:

p55 - Turning off labels
- Or right-click on the view title bars (e.g. Front, Left, Top, Perspective), and uncheck Labels.

p55 - VisArea
- Might like to mention where to get it, i.e. Rollupbar -> Objects -> Area ->VisArea.

- "placed just underneath the floor"... AFAICT might be clearer to say something like: "The VisArea should (must?) take the up at least as much area, as your final room will. This means in our example: The VisArea box's lower edge should align with our floor (actually include the center of the floor tiles), and the VisArea box sides align 'exactly' with the floor edges. The VisArea box should be at least as high as the height of the room." (From my tests I may be off though).

And maybe add a shot, with floor and the VisArea in place.

p61
- "Low Diffuse Multiplier" does not seem to exist "Diffuse Multiplier" does though.

p62 - Holes
- "You can change the size of your brush, ..." -> Could mention + , - as a reminder.

AEon

P.S. After placing a portal (page 56), I could under no circumstance change the height of the portal brush. The manual states this is possible, how? (Select and Scale does not work).

Tim,

a few more things...

p63
- "...Display menu, select CONFIGURE VIEW..." -> actually named "Configure Layout..."

p69
- Adding weapons is far less obvious than hinted I.e. both RollupBar Entity and Simple Entity have a weapons folder, but none of the entries there are MP weapons. The Pickup_Library contains health and armor, so that seems to work.

I was totally fooled... you need to do RollupBar -> Entity -> Pickups. Not obvious to oldtimers in mapping like me, who look for "weapons" not "pickups".

- It would be handy mention that RespawnTime is in minutes.

p70
- A paragraph on how to actually play the DM map in the game and how to distribute it would be nice. And what part does Ctrl+E (Export to Engine) play in the case of DM maps?

- A section on Team DeathMatch would also be instructive, since TDM has its own seperate mission. E.g. Are respawn's named differently? Etc.

p84
- "...console by pressing the ` key." -> On a German keyboard that is the ^ key, so mentioning to use the key "under the Esc key" may be helpful.

Can anyone tell me where I can find TagPoints? The manual says it is under Objects in the AI directory.

GordieFreeman,

Rollupbar -> Objects -> TagPoint -> TagPoints ?

But when I do that, the editor crashes really badly. This is under v1.1.1256 (the editor that came with the DVD distribution for UK).

It's right under Objects. (Pointer Finger Icon) AI is in the upper left hand corner and TagPoint is lower right hand. Make sure you then select TagPoint in the window below, as you have the choice of that, Respawn, or Comment. I believe it defaults to Respawn since it is the first option.

Hope that helps!

BTW - If you don't have a map loaded or didn't hit File, New. It WILL crash!! Surprised

Can anyone tell me where I can learn more about the Mission Handler that appears in the rollup for triggers, and how to use scripts in the scripts section of a trigger? I want to get a trigger to set off a patrol of Mercs walking in that direction...

Thanks! Smile

Thanks

You probably just need the latest version of Adobe Reader.
Go here: Adobe Reader - Adobe.com

Cheers! Wink

Tim,

I have a few problems fully understanding how to place the ViewArea and Portals from the infos in the walkthrough presented in the manual.

The indoor tutorial IMO is pretty clear and seems to work for me. But the tutorial on how to cut into a mountain, and then properly use portals to control the FOV never seems to work correctly. I.e. tunnel walls black, missing, there is a distinct glitch in display when passing the portals, you can look through the tunnel, but the other side shows no terrain, until you are in the tunnel etc...

Alas the screenshot is too blurry in the manual, and from my tests it seems to be mandatory to place the ViewArea and the Portals exactly. To make it short:

Could the walkthrough map used in the manual be made available for download? That way we could check things, i.e. to make sure that the portals can actually work properly, and how to place them.

Thanx.

I no longer have the map, sorry. The walkthrough for the internal levels is not one of my favourites, and would have been clearer if I'd stuck to something more simple to demostrate. To get a better idea of how portals and visareas work, take a look at the underground level in the Demo map.
