Someone recommended reinstalling everything but that has'nt helped.
I'm talking about the details part of the texture editor. The small objects you can scatter over a texture. Whenever I define these they generate OK, but when I save and reload the settings are gone ! It says in the window something about the detail objects only being associated with one texture. But I tried defining just one detail object for one texture definition and it still won't save! Should it save? It's a pain having to redefine them every time I reload the map. But if this is a "feature" then I guess I can live with it or work around it. Any ideas ? I have all the patches installed (in sequence) up to 1.4. DJ Barney |

This probably will not help, but I installed the original game from DVD and then used the cumulative patch v1.4. So the update happens in one step.
Maybe there is a difference. |

Yeah, thanks, I'll be using the big, cumulative patch if I have to rebuild.
But I wonder if that's the kind of "you have to reinstall windows" mantra that I hear a zillion times, which is rarely true! I found out that the map WILL reload with the detail objects, but the DEFINITIONS of them are not retained (regenerate textures without manually re-adding them and they are gone!). I wonder of this is just like spending time with someone ... you get to know their quirks and idiosyncracies. I'm more used to using The Gimp, or Photoshop, or 2D renderers like Bryce, where what you see is what you get, and things stay as they are! I already lost my patience with the Unreal Editor, but that was many years ago when I had MUCH less patience than I do today. DJ Barney |

Hmmm... maybe I can make this thread into a "how to" or editor introduction, or something.
Another thing I found out that could have somebody tearing their hair out by the roots! Ouch! LOL! ... Is that, you can't just move map (.cry) files between directories! If you do then waves will cease to lap and farcry reality will break down ! They have to be kept in the directory they started in for some reason. DJ Barney |

Hmmm... that is strange...
From the Swoop/AEon FAQ (that I just reread in parts), you should be able to move a cry file into another folder, you then need to load it into the editor and compile the map and lighting. Then the map should properly work. ...provided... the map does not use local non-default files... e.g. custom audio files etc. |

Ha! Ha! I've had the most BIZARRE things happening when trying to learn this editor !
I found the reload command in the menu, that I should be using, as I found either reloading the map or closing and restarting the editor seems to get rid of most problems. The "check map for errors" command also stops some irritating error messages in the log window. But tempering my frustration has been worthit ! Thanks for the replies, they've helped get me this far. I now have a functional map! (Entrance to Safe Haven Harbour). (Inside Safe Haven Harbour) Those trees on the left will probably have to go ! (Two suns ? An alternate reality ? An alien Planet ?) (Top of the mountain). I need to make the mountains higher, I don't think snow would be there at this altitude. I'm happy now... development continues :-D DJ Barney |
