$500

Checked Circuit City, Best Buy, Samsung, Walmart, Tiger Direct, and NEC. Nada.

If you want something better than the Viewsonic I suggest e-Bay. Nobody makes 'em anymore...

I'm still using my old 19" MAG. Lasted me five years so far. I've been working on an upgrade schedule though...gonna be a touch choice.

Thank you.

I know that some gamers say that the LCDs are better now and as good as the CFT's and some say they are better. That may be. But I am thinking that the really good LCD's are still more expensive than the best CRTs'.

I guess the time is coming when CRT's will not be available at all. Then I think of the MS FF stick and kick myself for not buying several when they were being closed out.

Nice OldBuzzard...I wouldn't be unhappy with that sitting on my desk.

I think a good CRT is just as good as a nice LCD at this point. Especially since you don't have to muck around with native resolutions and such.

Try IBM's Thinkvision. My father just got a 22" off Ebay for only € 50,-. Looks great!

I traded my 19in Samsung CRT for a 22in westinghouse LCD , there was a BIG difference in graphic quality for the better , now games like IL2 , RO and MAW look alot better at 1680 x 1050 than the older one . got it for $ 305 @ Tigerdirect

Here's an interesting comparison of CRT vs. LCD monitors.
http://www.ergoindemand.com/lcd_and_crt_monitor_comparison.htm

I switched from a 17 inch flat screen CRT to a 17 inch LCD several years ago, I have no desire to go back to a CRT.

I've been using a 19" Iiyama Vision Master 451 for almost ten years. I run FB at 1280x960 with a refresh rate of 100Hz on it.
In it's time, I've seen no reduction in sharpness & clarity. I'll be upset to lose it.

I still see then around on eBay (there are about 20 listed in the UK) and they go at reasonable prices, but the problem is pick-up.
Size, weight, safe packaging and postage costs make delivery a problem that most sellers (and buyers) prefer to avoid.

There is no doubt that the guys in it as a business still prefer the color control they have with a CRT. For the non-professional, though, the nicer LCD's simply do more for me.

LCD's

*They use less power
*They put out MUCH less heat
*They are more readily available in widescreen (thus more versatile if used for movies as well as games that support the format)
*They have a small footprint
*They have less negative effects on your eyes...regardless of your refresh rate

Hey, if you want a great CRT, the Viewsonic is definitely badass (I had 2 19" viewsonics), but for the same $500, you could get a 24" LCD Blink

I just went through a nightmare with the g225fb and Provantage. The first one they sent me was awful, no convergence settings could give me a clear picture and the color purity was totally hosed, with big purple and yellow splotches. Note that this was a brand new monitor in the Viewsonic factory box. I sent it back for RMA and the second one was only slightly better. I sent that back and I'm getting a refund.

I bought Viewsonic because I've had a variety of their monitors over the years, including several "Salvation Army Specials", one of which (GS790) is still soldiering on as my second monitor right now.

As I said, the g225s that they sent me were in the factory box, the screen face was unblemished, the casing unscratched, hell they even smelled new. Based on this, I kind of ruled out my first idea that this was a bait-n-switch with refurb monitors being sold as new.

Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is don't buy it if you can't see it in action first. Right now I'm using a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 21" that I got for $30 at, where else, the thrift store. It's far from perfect, but it's loads better than those two g225s.

I can understand the benefits of the LCD as far as energy consumption and weight and footprint. I whole heartedly agree that those are important.

At the same time I have never seen a flight sim as a demonstrator in an electronics outlet and the sales people seem to 'reccomend' LCD monitors that to me did not seem to have very good pictures.

If I have a problem like R_Target had I will definitely get return the monitor and get my money back.

Sales people in stores work on commission and they push certain brands. The stores themselves are not likely to stock the best components because they need a hefty markup in order to pay their bills and make a profit. So retail stores are not always the best place to buy. You can sometimes go to a retail store and see something demonstrated, then go to an online only store (no retail location means low overhead which means lower prices to you) and make a purchase, often getting a much better product for the same amount that you would pay for an inferior item at your local retailer.

Side note on CRT vs LCD. It appears those with LCD minitors can see object up to 5,000 feet away sooner, clearer, and easier than those with CRT Monitors. After many tests in simulations with both, this was the conclusion I had with others helping in the tests. Sad Eyes

BTW, I am still running a 21" CRT. I just have to live with it for now..

In my experiance in working in both web and game development where there are allot of graphics people, business that can't afford to buy new kit stick to old CRT's but those with a little cash give everyone LCD's or varying quality. Most of us here have 2 Dell 17" LCD's while the graphic/artists have 24" Dell 2407's or 23" Mac LCD's.

Thats because 99% of LCD's that come with PC's in stores are ****. A decent Ilyama, BenQ or Samsung LCD is something to behold. Once you get a good LCD/TFT you won't ever go back to a CRT, especially if its a widescreen one. The problem I've found buying LCD's/TFT's is there is allot of bad ones out there and misinformation, especially where response time is concerned.

I did see a samsung 17 inch LCD in a store that seemed to have graphics better than the bigger samsung lcd that they had on display.

None of them had a game hooked up though.

Too late anyway I bought a CRT and expect delivery next week.

I never heard of Ilyana or Benq before.

Neither really build monitors for the mass market like Dell or Viewsonic or Samsung, Ilyama and BenQ are more for professional needs hence the slightly higher price tag but far superior displays.
