From the 'Daily Record' in Scotland:

Social workers take newborn baby into care because 23-stone mum is too fat

Oct 22 2009

A BABY was taken into care in the maternity ward just hours after birth - because her 23-stone mum is so fat.

Officials swooped after repeated warnings to the mum and her partner to bring their other six children's weight under control.

The couple, who can't be named for legal reasons, have a combined weight of 41 stones.

Two of the kids have already been placed in foster care because they are so heavy and their local council have spent thousands of pounds on "minders" to help the family improve their diet.

The couple were warned that they faced losing their other kids - including the newborn child - if they didn'tchange their ways and slim down.

And the baby was taken into care in the maternity ward of Dundee Ninewells Hospital on Tuesday, just 24 hours after the birth.

The mum - who tipped the scales at 23 stone before she fell pregnant - was said to be "clearly upset" when social workers turned up at the hospital and took her youngest child.

She signed herself out of the hospital immediately after being told her baby - born by Caesarean section - would not be going home with her.

The child's 54-year-old father last night told of the family's heartache at the decision.

He said: "I can't sleep, I can't eat. I can't tell you how powerless I feel. The other children are devastated too.

"My wife was told she could stay with our baby for another 24 hours but then she would have to go home alone.

"She got up out of her bed and left the hospital right there and then. I had to wait behind to say my goodbyes to the baby."

A friend of the 40-year-old mother added: "She is inconsolable. How could they do such a thing to her? The father was unable to hold back his tears.

"She signed herself out of the hospital straight away so she could go home and grieve with what is left with her family.

"She has no idea what to do next. The family feel that they have done enough to help their kids and try to keep their weight down.

"They love their kids so much and this is a mother's worst nightmare."

Ironically, the family had originally contacted Dundee City council's social work department to ask for help with their children, including one with developmental problems.

At the time, they had a toddler who weighed four stone and a 13-year-old son who weighed more than 16 stone, and officials expressed concern about their welfare.

The council spent £114,000 on "minders" to ensure they were eating properly.

But last month, the council took the decision to remove the youngest two children.

The family had already made two legal attempts to have their children returned to them and were due to bring a third appeal before the children's reporter today.

Tam Fry, a member of the National Obesity Forum claims the family were given more than enough chances to change their ways, describing the child's outlook if she had stayed with her family as "horrific".

Last night, a Dundee City Council spokesman said: "We will not comment in detail on any family.

"But we have made it clear on numerous occasions that children would NOT be removed from a family environment just because of a weight issue."

Yay team! Mission accomplished!

That is harsh. Stupid fat parents may be stupid and unhealthy and may make their kids equally stupid and unhealthy but taking someone's newborn baby is fairly surreal.

How much is a "stone" in kilos or pounds? This is the first time I hear about such a unit!

What concerns me is that the article never elaborated on whether the council observed continued bad dietary habits or not. A toddler weighing 4 stone (56lb) sounds like a possible medical condition to me? Were they all tested for a genetic gland disease or something of the like?

Well social services managed to take newborns away if they deemed their mothers mentally unfit under the conservatives.

I see no real difference between that and this. TBH parents just need to be better educated and somehow encouraged to properly feed their offspring. That includes the under nourished as well. That's one thing where I disagree with die hard libertarians, although your child should not be the property of the state I fail to see why selfish parents like these should be allowed to do what the hell they want. Another great example are those that push their sons and daughters to extremes in sports stunting their growth.
