LF, I remember seeing some Frogs (didn't know they were Frogs) in a circa 1940 ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS and I was wondering who made the models. This was in 1965. Funny thing, we were just starting to get Frogs in the US at that time. I wondered why somebody named a model company Frog! I liked their Skua and Barracuda. I was fanatical about Airfix and never really appreciated Frog until years later.

When I was a kid, saturday wasn't saturday unless I went into town and returned with an Airfix kit. Matchbox took my attention for a while with their fancy two - or even three on the bigger ones - coloured kits, but I always went back to the big 'A'. Frogs were a bit of a rarity - I have vague recollections of their ship models, but for some reason they didn't seem to be stocked at usual modelling stores. This guy sums it up pretty well, lots I can identify with. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5304780.stm

Tamiya flat paints thinned with 70% rubbing alcohol....mix anywhere from 50/50 paint/alcohol all the way down to just a few drops when you really want to take your time building the color (like for exhaust stains). I've had very little problems with this set up. "Anyone who's not interested in model airplanes must have a screw loose somewhere." - Paul MacCready

Here's the page for the Testors Modeler's Guide. They have it online as a PDF now so you don't have to spend 20 bucks buying it unless you just have to have it on shiny paper and ringbound. http://testors.com/hobbyist_guides.aspMe, I cut everything by about 40/60 thinner to paint. 90% strength rubbing alcohol for Gunze Aqueous and Tamiya...and about 30/70 water to paint for Model Master. The acrylics are somewhat translucent so a good primer coat is useful for an even finish. Same ratio for Model Master enamels but I use Floquil Dio-sol for the thinner. It's hotter than Testor Airbrush Thinner, and it makes for a smoother, faster drying coat. And its great for cleaning the airbrush of just about anything. 58th AVG "WannaBees" A fast connect speed and the Internet means never having to say you're wrong. While the lead is still flying there's still hope.

Nope its 1/48 Scale. One more negative point about the kit. The decals are very delicate! I had one sliding nicely on the paper backing and as soon as I put it on the plane it ripped to shreds. One of those "WTF?!?" moments. I ordered some aeromaster decals to replace them.

Good article, LF. Frog was well-distributed here until their end about 1976. The Airfix box tops were big selling points. My particular favorites were the originals for the Battle (attacking the Maas bridges), Blenheim, and the Hampden. The Matchbox Lysander was a favorite of mine. The Wellesley and Hendon were classics. Wish the Czech MPM people would do a 1:48 Wellesley. When Airfix first came to the U.S. in 1964, they were a boy's dream. Prices just right for building an air force. My interest, prior to the coming of U.S. Airfix, was mainly imported Airfix ships, but, when U.S. Airfix released the flood of airplane models, I was drawn to all the English and German airplanes I'd never seen before, like the Anson and Hudson (gad, I was crazy about those two), the Bf 110 (another favorite), Do 217, Wellington, etc. After U.S. Airfix went bust, we had to order from mail order hobby shops. Heller arrived in 1966 with all those fascinating French aircraft. I remember the least expensive U.S. Airfix airplanes series, the one with the Bf 109G, the Typhoon, and Spit IX, was only 39 cents---ten cents less than the U.S. Revell 1:72 scale fighters.

For those of you wondering why anyone would call a company Frog(Apart from the obvious)it came about because the original company made flying balsa aircraft with the tag-line "Flys Right Of the Ground" And as for Airfix box art,it was top stuff, and i bought more kits because of it,who could resist all that action!Of course now we have no blazing enemy fighters,no burning engines (the B-17 box art was so dynamic!)As my own tribute to Airfix box art i did a skin of the Me 109G-6 as painted by Roy Cross, and mocked up a screen shot based on the original.

Roy Cross is terrific, and that 109 illustration was one of my favorites---and I loved that 109 model---it was the best G kit for ages!

It was my birthday last week, and completely out of the blue my wife bought me a compressor and 2 dual action airbrushes! I hadn`t even hinted I might like one. Anywho, I thought it would be a good time to start a new diorama, still early stages but I post some more pics as I progress. The truck is a 1/35 Ural made by Omega models, was a bit of a chore to build as the fit isn`t great. The major construction is done and I have just finished priming it. Britain...try writing history without us!
