Nelson Mandela, who was instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa and rose from prisoner to president, is celebrating his 90th birthday.

After a series of public appearances around the world over the past few weeks, he is expected to spend the day at home with his family.

Apparantly a lorry load of new cars turned up at his house the other day. Turned out it was a big mistake......the lorry driver misread Nissan Maindealer.

Arrested in 1962 (with help of CIA some sources state), aged 44.
Tried, branded as a communist, terrorist, and a traitor.
Imprisoned. Forced to hard labour work in a lime quarry.
Allowed 1 letter and 1 visit per 6 months.
Letters often censored to unreadable state.
Subjected to a plot by South African Intelligence, during which he would be given a chance to try to escape only to be shot during an attempt.
Offered a conditional release in 1985 in return for renouncing armed struggle. He refused the offer, saying:"What freedom am I being offered while the organisation of the people remains banned? Only free men can negotiate. A prisoner cannot enter into contracts."
Released in 1990, after 27 (twenty seven) years in prison.
Became a president of South Africa in 1994, after his party ANC won majority of votes in the election.

There are no words to describe the greatness of this man. Happy birthday, Mandela.

If I were king, such overtly bad punnage would warrant a public flogging... More's the pity... Crying

On the subject of the original post... Great, great man. If I could have dinner with one living man/woman today, he'd be it.
