I notice yours has got 263 Squadron decals (HE) and mine has got 137's (SF) - you'd have thought the tight buggers would have supplied both for both.

Have you bought one for yourself as well mate?

Fiddly little blighters aren't they... Veryhappy

I've picked up quite alot of info for Magpies IL-2 Whirlwind but just recently I've got some startling new stuff that knocks what I found before out of touch.
So the model will be altered to show all that, but am hoping the cockpit detailing that between myself and Bolox have worked on this past year will be made into a 3D 360deg. cockpit of museum quality! Again I'm talking to a 3D modeler, Aviation Artist about turning this material into something more than paper...

Just hope it all comes to something without it failing again to the Curse of the Whirlwind... Wink2 Surprised Veryhappy

Picked up two Airfix's after blowing the rent on other kits in a different shop. (see model airplane thread for details). First Whirly kits I've ever obtained. Surprised

Looks like a nice little kit, but only comes with 137 Sqdn P-SH decals - oddly enough the very aircraft in TT's pic above. Smile Optional 263 SF markings would have nice, but beggars can't be choosers. Veryhappy Formulating a long-term plan whereby I obtain lots more and finish them as various Whirlies including prototypes and Westland's blue civvie Whirly. Figured at 1/72nd scale the tiny differences wouldn't be too horrendous to attempt. This would of course, involve either making my own decals or hand painting - maybe tiny stencils.

Quick question - would 137 have used the dark earth/green paintscheme? Never seen a pic of that. Plenty of 263 in early cammo. Just looking for options other than 'wheels up/wheels down' for my little prototype treasures.

Interesting news about research - looking forward to results. Thumbs Up

As for the Mossie, Rjel - what sort of sick pervert would give one pride of place in a collection....oh, wait a minute. Blush

Very nice 'Flypast' magazine one-off special on the Mossie available at the moment. Picked one up yesterday whils avoiding fianancial responsibilities. Smile

Keep the faith Whirly Whiners! Our day is coming! Thumbs Up

Letter in Aeroplane from Jim Munro, 49 Blandy Road, Heley-on-Thames, Oxon, RG9 1QB.

His father was a BoB pilot and "a Squadron Leader of WW-equipped263 Sqdn in 1940-41 based at Drem near North Berwick"

He is making a "very low budget" film about the WW and currently has 7mins of of period film and is seeking more (and still photos). Has interviews with Captain Eric Brown and Sqdn Ldr Alex Torrance (137 Sqdn).

Plan is to have complete (for TV broadcast?) next year for 70th anniversary of BoB.

Anyone who can help contact him at above address.

Well, I can't find any mention either mate, they might have had the same camo when 137 Sq was formed in the September of 41 but it would be pushing the boundaries to say they were for sure... Wink2

As for what to make you could always make a crashed whirly... Never saw anyone make one before, maybe this one...

That would be an interesting little diversion...I was thinking of putting a shot-up Lufty bomber on my recovery set trailer and hanging a 109 off the crane - getting a load of HO/OO scale railway children watching, while the soldiers sent to guard the wrecks chat up housewives in pinnies and headscarves...maybe the landlord of the local pub bringing a pint of foaming ale to the victorious RAF pilot who has hurried to the scene in his sports car complete with golfclubs on the back, perhaps his long-suffering batman (or woman - I've noticed lots of ref's in recent reading) could be presenting him with a piece of his latest kill...you can see how my little whimsies take root, can't you? A simple cheap Airfix kit to keep me from spending holiday money in the pub has turned into a model village that could become a major tourist attraction. Surprised

- but a downed Whirly....hmmmmm....tempting.

Note closed canopy in your first shot...makes you wonder if the Whirly was so good it flew itself. Wink2

Happy

Thats Browns Whirlwind, the Hun were very interested in her and fortunately took some photos (The Germans always seem to have had camera's with them)that showed us some detailing that was invaluble. She or parts of her eventually went to Rechlin (Cockpit & Cannons) for evaluation. None of the remains or any report/photo's have ever been found though... Sad
