The Postman came today with my Air Classics 1/48 Westland Whirlwind, took some quick photos of the kit to show you. Looking at it has confirmed that I was right to not attempt to make this kit… Veryhappy

See what you think…

It looks as if my 'conversion' might be possible, but I think I'd better try it on an Airfix one first. Wink2

Good day for Whirly kit procurement. Smile

I notice yours has got 263 Squadron decals (HE) and mine has got 137's (SF) - you'd have thought the tight buggers would have supplied both for both.

Thats a mistake, the Whirlwind was of all metal construction, including all flight control surfaces as well.

Another thing that will need sorting is the strong panel lines alone the rear fuselage always shown on any model (See second from last photo above) of the Whirly, now I've looked at alot of good quality photo's of this aircraft and as yet I've never seen them on any production aircraft that strong. I can understand how they have trouble moulding something that fine on a 1/48 model, but I would hope that it would be possible to fill them over and rescore them again with much finer line...

You can see how fine they are here:

Also there are some hatches that are missing from the port & starboard sides that will need to be scribed...

I'm in touch with a couple modelers that are interested in making this kit for me, but with some scratch building of new parts to make this alot more accurate...

Following this story with some classically reserved British interest. Regular pictorial updates, please. Thumbs Up

What's the fun in someone making it for you? Most of my youth was wasted in butchering up model airplane kits. I don't think I ever finished one that I didn't find extra parts for at the end. Then I learned about instruction sheets. Smile

It's a Whirlwind ferchrissakes! It's got to be perfect. Look, you want to buy a nice fish - you go to a respected fishmonger, right? You want some nice steak - you pop down to MacDonalds - I don't think so!

I can turn out kits 'till the cows come home - like a burger flipper can churn out cr@p till the end of his shift. Near enough ain't good enough when we cross over into Whirly territory. No offence, but it's quasi-religious with certain sectors of this august forum.

Have you bought one for yourself as well mate?

Fiddly little blighters aren't they... Veryhappy

I've picked up quite alot of info for Magpies IL-2 Whirlwind but just recently I've got some startling new stuff that knocks what I found before out of touch.
So the model will be altered to show all that, but am hoping the cockpit detailing that between myself and Bolox have worked on this past year will be made into a 3D 360deg. cockpit of museum quality! Again I'm talking to a 3D modeler, Aviation Artist about turning this material into something more than paper...

Just hope it all comes to something without it failing again to the Curse of the Whirlwind... Wink2 Surprised Veryhappy

I've noticed that. I've wondered too how a little used plane and a rather unattractive one at that, generates such devotion. Wink It's not like it's a Mosquito for crying out loud. Now that is a beautiful A/C.* Smile

*All preceding comments were done in fun and do not reflect the opinions of this poster... except for the ugly plane one.
