Whoops! Stupid me! This belongs in the OFF TOPIC section. Mods... Wink

Here are some coins / medals from the pre-World War II / World War II era collection of the local Mühldorfer Kreismuseum. I was tasked with photographing them for an upcoming exhibition so here are some of the photos I took of them. Smile

This is a coin from 1923 with no purchasing power. It serves as a reminder of the suffering Germany endured during the 1920s due to massive inflation. On the back is a price list for common commodities. For example, according to this coin on December 1st, 1923, a pound of bread cost 260 billion Reichsmark.

Another coin from 1923 and therefore it is classified as "inflation money". This is a 500 Mark coin. Due to a shortage of metals that were usually used for coin money, this coin was made out of aluminum. When I held it this coin inbetween my fingertips I was amazed at how "light" it was.

A 1936 "5 Reichspfennig" coin.

This is a "2 Reichsmark" coin from 1939. The man on the front is Paul von Hindenburg, the former president of Germany.

This is a medal created during World War II to commemorate the Wehrmacht victory parade through the Nagelschmiedturm in Mühldorf am Inn on July 17, 1940 after the victory over France.

Thanks for the pics, very interesting!
Strangely enough today my buddy in school showed me exactly such a 2-Mark coin.
With the same text and with Hindenburg on the back. Blink

I have a 5 mark coin..looks pretty much the same as the 2 mark coin.

"Once (I think it was 31st aug. 1940), I was in a fight with four Hurricanes over Dover.
I was back over the channel when I saw another Hurricane coming from Calais, trailing white smoke, obviously in a bad way.
I flew up alongside him and escorted him all the way to England and waved goodbye.
A few weeks later the same thing happened to me.
That would never have happened in Russia - never". (Erich Rudorffer - 109 pilot)

Anytime. Smile

The 5 Mark coin does look pretty much the same as the 2 Mark coin I photographed. On another forum I also posted this thread and the first poster literally told me to go to hell because of my "Nazi propaganda". Veryhappy

that's cool, I didnt know Hindenburg was on the Reichsmark coins, even after death. did they change at all? such as during the war years. I always thought a megalomaniac like Hitler would have himself on the coin.

Those are very interesting coins cawimmer! I have a 1929 10 Reichspfenning similar to the 1936 5 Reichspfenning coin in your photo.

I kind of thought the same thing jadger. I have a coin from 1944 (a 1 Reichspfenning) with the eagle and swastika on one side, and just the numeral 1 on the other.
It is a curious coin, I'm not sure what sort of metal, but it is dark bluish/black and oddly tarnished. If I could figure out how to take a picture of it I would. (I can't get the camera to focus properly. Nuh uh )

I also have a 5 Reichspfenning from 1938, and a 20 mark paper bill from 1944. It is interesting because it isn't a Reichmark, but I think it may be military money.

Those are very nice.
I had many Germans wartime coins in excellent condition. I liked them very much...then my sons, about 4 and 7 at the time (nearly 10 years ago), got a hold of them and walked up the street and used them to buy newspapers out of one of those machines!!! Mad
I can sort of laugh about it now...then again, it still upsets me.

You certainly have seen a sharp rise this last year. As for price hell, we Europeans aren't really impressed.

I have an old tray after my great aunt. It has a glass top, and sandwiched between it and the bottom are old bank notes from Germany right after the Great war. While some have quite normal values (10 Pfennig, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 mark), some are 10-50 million marks. It's an interesting little piece of history.

When I went down to Ohio we thought we were in heaven when we went to the gas station. Canada supplies the US with a lot of oil, but for some reason gas prices in Canada are higher, WTF? Angry

I was wondering about that too. Perhaps only "dead" people made the list. Big Grin

Maybe Adolf wanted his image to be on a 5 Mark coin after he died. Who knows... Thumbs Up

Anytime. Wink

It's interesting to see that you guys are also coin collectors, particularly about World War II. I should hang out here more often. Big WW2 history buff here but I'm so busy at the moment I rarely have time to spare for the fun stuff! Sad
