I had a thought. How did mail and documents move between the axis and allies in WW2? I mean, HOW was it done?

BOAC ran a courier service to Sweden in a civilian-marked Mosquito, they were shot at many times by both sides.

I have a vision of a foggy mid-channel meeting between a Kreigsmarine E-boat and an RN MTB.....canvas bags being tossed through the darkness...

Some of it would have been radio, I suppose, but what about the red cross parcels and messages.

Spying is different, this is authorized contact.

Maybe it wasn't? Except for Red Cross stuff.

My guess would be that it would go through a neutral country. I seem to remember that red cross parcels made their way through Switzerland.

I never thought of a neutral country! That would work just fine.

This is from a Mosquito pilot flying intruder ops over Italy (from Malta) in 1943:-

“A little added employment on these trips was the production of rubber banded bundles of letters written by Italian POWs and addressed to a specific locality.

These we were asked to deliver and it was usually easy, for the localities were often sleepy little towns.

This was service indeed and we liked to think that the letters had only to be collected and delivered next morning.”
