Thats just ridiculous.
Nvidia the production team who came up with that idea should be fired... They will sell 1000 times as many decent mid range cards as they will those monstroseties! (sp?). ------------------------------------------------------------- "Over Dieppe, the wing was immediately bounced by a hundred FW 190s and a few Me 109s. I heard Johnson effing and blinding as he broke 610 into a fierce attack. I was hard at it dodging 190s, but I found time to speak sharply to Johnson about his foul language." - WingCo Jaime Jameson 12 Group Spitfire |

GTX280 Crysis 1920x1200 4xAA VeryHigh = 17.2
HD4850 CF Crysis 1920x1200 4xAA Very High = 22.96 4850 in Crossfire works out cheaper ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "You can't blow the smoke from such a majestic stogie in just anyone's face. If most games don't support the full features of this card then why would anyone buy it now. Just wait untill games do support this, then in a year or two buy the same card at what, mabey about 30% less.

As I noted they are going to be churning out the underlying components anyway, so the relative volumes are going to be flexible between standard graphics cards, GPU only, and the mixed product.
It does seem that Nvidia has preempted the market. Nvidia is king of the GPU market at the moment, with both the chips and the programming tools. Things can change, of course. |

Aimail - I am not impressed by the sound measurements if they are 5cm (2 inches) from the bare card. Much more representative would be a test of the volume you can expect at normal head height from a card mounted in a typical PC under a desk. The difference is overall noise, when taking into account the typical number of fans in a serious gamer's PC is going to hide the differences somewhat, as will the blocking of the sound via the case, etc.
Given the figures as they are, in the raw, the 280, even with your ear 2 inches from the whirring fan is only just noticeably louder than the 260 when running the test. But it would be twice as loud as 8800, etc. I am surprised that it is so loud, though. It's certainly far from ideal, but the test is a bit artificial. |

What it fails to mention is that the cost of 3 GTX 280s is 1500 pounds. It also fails to mention that two ATI 4850s in crossfire get the same performance as a GTX 280 in 80 percent of games tested and the ATI 4870 will alone have about 90 percent of the perormance of the GTX 280 for half the price. And most likely half the power consumption, and half the noise. ALso the GTX280 isnt really any better than 2 8800gt's for Crysis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "You can't blow the smoke from such a majestic stogie in just anyone's face. I think I'll just do my usual of staying one generation behind and saving a load of cash, there isn't much point in getting something that really only has bragging rights, and not much else without games that make full use of the card.

From what little I do know about FSX (just bought it a couple weeks ago, actually), getting higher FPS depends much more on processor and memory performance than the GPU. SLI affords little, if any benefit. Apparently this rule of thumb has been true of all versions of MSFS. |

"Killed themselves???" I don't think so...at that price they don't expect to sell many. This is a "proof of concept" consumer product. Any investment they made in the manufacturing technology can be recouped (in some way) in the mid-priced budget cards they will sell somewhere down the line...
I'm just a Rock 'n' Roll footnote... |
