It's to set the proper distance between the barrel and the bolt face, and to make sure the timing (when the firing pin strikes the primer on a round- also dictates the ROF) is correct.

Either things being wrong can lead to the gun not performing properly. In some cases, particularly in regards to head space- improper setting can lead to the gun exploding.

OK. And what exactly do you use that 'tool' for? I'm not an expert in home improvement, but 50s don't seem the kind of things you use to make things, they seem more fit to unmake them.

My favorite tool is my Ryobi circular saw with fore and aft lasers.

My most reached for tool is my Craftsman #2 x 8" phillips screwdriver.

Not all tools are for home improvement. In my prior profession a .50 HMG was one of my "tools", and the gauge was integral to using the Ma.

But- on to home improvment tools I'm fond of my nail gun and saws-all. Also like the air compressor, table saw, drill press... all of 'em really because they all come in handy.

edit-
Don't actually own one of those timing gauges. Just used them quite a bit. Handy little things. Also good for hitting people with when they don't listen to instructions Googly

I've used the same #2 Philips screwdriver with a hardened tip for thirty years now; it has a beautiful easy grip type handle, and has never let me down.

Other contenders:

My trusty Buck folding Hunter (knife)
My Leatherman 'Kick' multitool
Duct tape.

cheers

Swiss Army knife. Although I've yet to use the tool for getting horses out of stones.

My favorite are these:

LATHE

MILL

For hand tools, it would be a ball peen hammer, a set of chisels, a good set of files, and a hack saw. With these, I can reasonably cob together whatever I need that's made out of metal in a pinch.

Okay, okay! If I had to pick just one, it would be a long handled hatchet with a hammer head on the backside.

A headspace and timing gauge is a good one; IF you happen to have an M2 Browning Fifty Caliber Mafukinsheengun at your ready use.
But my favorite tools to have are a standard Leatherman and a Swiss army knife on my belt. They will always come in handy.
As far as garage tools go; the list is too long.

Odin was my favourite tool, <3

Otherwise it would have to be GPS, quicker and easier than triangulating Thumbs Up
