Baghdad at Sunrise: A Brigade Commander's War in Iraq by Col. Peter Mansoor (Ret)
A very good read. One of the best books on the Iraq war that I have read. If you want to really get a good understanding of what happened in that war and what went wrong.. read that book. |

Hey Bearcat-I was talking to a friend since High school(who's father-in-law is the pilot for the A-26) "Spirit of Waco" for the Ranger Wing CAF.
Anyway,he was telling me at one of their recent monthly meetings, they had a crew chief for one or more of the Tuskegee airmen's planes gave a lecture. He said it was great, very interesting! I told him I want to go to the meetings from now on! I thought it may be one of them you know,I realize that's not alot of info for you to go on,sorry I don't have more. "There is what we refer to as a flying machine:in it I see the opening verse of the opening chapter of a book which has no end." Rudyard Kipling "Not lower level, arguably more violent." Quote from Euro forum visitor pertaining to Americans. Lyrics from Naked Raygun's "Rat Patrol" "What we need to take control,we could use the Rat Patrol. What's that coming over the dune?... Chasing the halftracks across the sandflats, got a nice pine box,for that desert fox, machine guns blaring, and Arabs staring wondering why,the Westerners are there. It's the same old story, and it'll happen again." |

Bearcat, thankyou for the recommendation, I'll look it up. Also, could we have a book thread as a sticky?
Something like you've just posted with recommendations, small reviews, etc. Christmas is coming and after many years of hinting I've got the family to realise I'd much rather receive book tokens than socks, pants, shaving lotion - that sort of thing Also, my local library service allows online browsing of their catalogue so I can order anything I fancy from it. Wonderful! Personally I'd like any recommendations on aircrew memoirs from the Eighth Airforce, Red Airforce and Korean war-from any side. Is this possible? |

Looks interesting. Thanks for heads up.
& +1 for Arthur's suggestion - I've picked up a couple of good 'uns recently and will pass on details soon. "I was working on this skin for a week, and you post a picture of a damn turd right in my thread!" |

Cheers, Blairgowrie!
Eighth Air Force, you say Arthur? Got this one? One of my 'desert island books'. Check out the review and sample pages here: The Mighty Eighth Roger A Freeman Large format. Unit histories, characters, personal accounts, colour profiles - it's all there. A beautiful book and a rattling good read. Not cheap - but if you've got a friendly librarian, put 'em to work. A book I finished recently:
Vasily Emelianenko: Red Star Against the Swastika (I read the Finnish translation) A memoir of a Soviet Sturmovik-pilot. Very good in my opinion. Very atmospheric and personal account of his experiences in the front 1942-44. He tells a lot about the people he flew with and were his friends in his unit, which makes the story very human and warm. But it also becomes clear how deadly job the Sturmovik-pilots had. Personally I could recommend the books of Neunundzwanzigsechs, the best one is IMHO the book Julius Meimberg wrote.

Reading this one at the moment - been after it for a while and stumbled onto it in a backstreet second-hand bookshop, as good as new. Made my day. A very well done account of the Italian contribution to the Battle of Britain. Interesting personalities and events. Amongst other fascinating stories, the combats between CR42's and the RAF are brought to life from first-hand accounts in an exciting and well-written manner. Until now, such information was proving hard to come by. Recommended.

Ah- my wife just read that book. I originally got it for myself but found the premise too depressing. So the wife gave me a Cliff Notes synopsis. Also she was a recent guest on The Daily Show. See clip at http://www.thedailyshow.com/ and look for full episodes link. It was less than a month ago so it should be easy to find. -------------------------- |
