Should politics be banned?

Define 'politics' in a non-political way. If you can't, you can't ban it without also banning anyone from complaining that a posting is political, and is therefore not allowed on the forum.

Consider for example this statement, by Mortoma:

Meaning that scientific threads such as the global warming one, stay strictly scientific.

All the scientific data I get says there is no global warming at this time. The places I get my data from are all legit and all the low temperature records, massive snowfall records, ice and snow coverage data, glacial advancing data and such is all verifiable. It can all be backed up because it's collected by professionals. Just that people don't want to believe it is all.

He says he's not arguing about politics, but science. I'd say that 'people don't want to believe it is all' is a political statement, not a scientific one. I can't prove this scientifically, but I sure as hell can put up a political argument about it being politics.

I studied a fair bit of political anthropology at university, and I can assure you all that I can find a political dimension to pretty well any any social discourse. If you were to ban me from pointing out such politics, you would also be banning social science.

THere is a simple way to eliminate political postings from a forum: close the forum. Otherwise accept that we are political animals, and you might as well try to ban chimpanzees from picking lice out of each other's fur (actually, I could argue that is a political act too, I also studied primate behaviour... I have no problem with political threads, within reason.Multiple threads about the same subject get a bit tedious, but thats covered in the rules anyway.

Tell you what, political threads definately make for some interesting reading and perspective, especially when I have a slow day at work.

The definate downside is that yes, those threads can go sour in a hurry.

I'm tired of having to wade through all the verbal buggery about America's politics. No other nation represented here keeps banging on about their health care, guns or whatever other bloody ******** to the extent that you people do. If you must exercise your "rights", make it your right to show some restraint. It's like being at a dinner party where one couple always want to have a domestic in front of the other guests.

Better idea then. Political discussion on a time-share arrangement. America has obviously had their turn. Another nation can now have a go for the next month. They can blow a lot of hot air and argue the toss backwards and forwards (or not) for the next thirty days. After that some other nation can have a go. Maybe have a raffle to see who's next. In the meantime, America can bite it's tongue for a change.

If you don't like a topic, don't open the thread.

Um, yeah.

So don't open the threads maybe?

Stick to the ones about the 21-stone children.

Ok. New Zealand: great country or greatest country?

Slanted articles on websites don't constitute "scientific data."

Additionally, if you were so well versed on the topic you'd realize that it hasn't been called "global warming" by any credible researchers for many years.

I think those are the reasons that people object to your statements. You have not demonstrated an adequate understanding of the subject matter to make judgments about the veracity of information related to it.

I don't know about whether they are the greatest country or not, but they seem pretty civilized about their politics.

Check out this vid on how seriously Kiwis treat their politicians:
