the picture of the mine should never crack you up. I drive past/through Nonington, Tilmanstone and Bettshanger from time to time, all the mine buildings are still there, as there listed, to help us learn irony. I sometimes happen to talk to these men that worked down these mines, and they were better men than me. And yet though kent could cope more than up north, so many villages had there heart ripped out. Miners are different to other people, if you can be accepted in a pub talking to a bunch of old miners, you will learn. Its another thing we can't do anymore. We can't mine coal anymore, we can't build ships anymore, we can't make steel, we can't build are own nuclear power stations anymore, progress is amazing. fruitbat U___1)Nazi Germany built all the best things and won teh war. We can still build or own ships, but to a lesser extent I know.

Guys, the point of the pithead picture was rather than bury her let's just throw her down a mine. I'll bet there's more than a few ex-miners who would be happy to perform the service.

I have a better place where she can go I'm sure the miners wont mind,
Dark humour aside I'd love if one of our American buddies/posters opened a thread about their president at the same time and their thoughts now on his reign. POEHALI! |

Good hunting, Cajun76 =USAF= (Ret) Magnum-PC.comCheck it, bleed. Bro... was ON! Didn't trip. But the folks was freakin', Man. Hey, and the pilots were laid to the bone, Homes. Its a good thing the moderators can maintain a neutral perspective when it comes to a sensitive subject such as politics. If you want an escuse to post any criticism on the Bush administration why not have the guts to open the thread yourself? Well fairford got cancelled for the first time in 38 bloody years which was precisely the time I decided to pop my cherry and go. Thus confirming the belief that where ever I decide to got it will rain, with the curious exception of Scotland.
And so I find myself sat here listening to my blood pressure rise as I recall the lost chance that should have been the civil war in the 1980's. I will list a couple of general points that occur as I mull through this thread. The Tories stayed in power thanks to:- The previous labour government who took their votes for granted. Mr FOOT, and Mr Kinnock who although good intentioned where quite ill equipped to deal with the 'megalomaniac' Thatcher. Labour who should have taken a leaf out of the Tories book and dealt with Scargill before he got started. A media driven paranoia frenzy about all things left of the political debate brought on by a sustained cold war and left over paranoia about Stalin which I believe did more to keep her in power than anything else. I think some times that if the cold war had not collapsed then she and her ilk would probably still be in power today and possibly heading a military junta. I remember my parents and family saying that the police never marched better than when they did in the eighties. Also Maggie was prepared to use this countries military with varied levels of justification to subdue any form of civil or political resistance. A couple of good examples where she applied the 'quick fix were' when She sent the SAS in to sort out a prison riot in Scotland. And there was that little assassination that she sanctioned in Gibraltar. In response to the miners and the question of who voted for her. With regard to the miners they have now erected a huge piece of art work in the welsh assembly in honour of the arch hag? and to me that is the ultimate fecking insult to all those who have good reason hate her, all they need to do now is award Scargill a knighthood but I suspect we will have to wait for another tory regime for that but with any luck some one will flip the ****ers switch before that! SEE HERE As to who voted for her? I find the voters of Maggie are legion but silent for fear of Madame Guillotine's wrath. Oh and finally the Tories never lost they just switched sides. |

Steiners not a bad mod really
As much as I liked CrazyIvan, he WOULD take a good chance to ban you if you disagreed with his politics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "You can't blow the smoke from such a majestic stogie in just anyone's face. Wow.... Man, the things you learn listening. I've learned more about Ms. Thatcher and her government from this thread than I ever knew before. But I was busy during her reign and an ocean away. Interesting thread, man oh man to see history debated civilly (for the most part) is always refreshing.
I personally doubt that a discussion of the Reagan era would be even half that civil. I'm surprised he's not been mentioned in that those two were joined at the hip. I thought it amazing how the U.S., who had longstanding treaties with England and Argentina, somehow managed to leave the coin standing on end. Da Worfster |

Well, like most history it's worth keeping the memories alive, in the hope that past mistakes won't get made again. Now that we're seeing the slow collapse of our present government, at least as far as public popularity is concerned, we need to remember why the Tory government fell. Many current voters have no memories of the sleaze and general corruption that was uncovered when ministers and MPs like Jonathan Aitken, Neil Hamilton & Jeffrey Archer were prosecuted. Two out of the three were actually jailed. Maggie thought they were all wonderful at one time or another.
Dame Shirley Porter, Tory leader of Westminster Council, was implicated in a gerrymandering scandal which involved 'moving' (viz. evicting) Labour supporters from 8 separate wards to ensure that the Council did not become Labour-led in 1990. She was convicted and fined £27 million pounds. What is important to note is the effect such revelations have on the public consciousness, especially on the younger members of (a) society (that Thatcher eventually refused to recognise). An attitude of "well, if they can do it, why not me?" started up, and has burnt like wildfire ever since. B |
