In Quantico Va... which is about 15 miles from my house... I went there with my son today for the first time since it opened. It is one of the finest museums I have ever been in. If you are ever in the area of Quantico it s a must see.
It is free for now... there are several aircraft in it.. from Jennys to Hueys & Panthers.. It spans the Marine Corp from it's inception to Iraqui Freedom.. and of course we can think wat we want to about the politicians... but in my book the soldiers always get a hardy ~!S!~
The next time I go I will bring my camera and take pictures... the flag from the second Mt. Suribachi phot at Iwo is there... all kinds of videos and first hand accounts.. The mannequins in the displays look almost like real people... and all of them were made from casts of real Marines with the same MOS.. In other words... when you see a display of a Marine sniper... that Mannequin was cast from a real Marine sniper... It is as if they asked real modern day Marines to pose in a picture to simulate an event.. but in this case it was a full body cast.. The mannequis have scars and brusies on them.. their faces show fear, pain, sorrow... It is just a great museum experience and if you love military history, you must visit this place.
I have one in PB right now, I'll upload more tomorrow, since I'm at work right now. Me and the boy back in March last year. The mannequins are very well done. He is begging to climb on the Amtrak
My son's Marine unit sponsored a family day there earlier this year but we were unable to attend due to elderly parent issues. All the parents raved about the place though, so when he returns from Iraq (late October-early November) we plan on taking a family vacation there. Even my daughter, the accountant, wants to go
That's a great diarama of the old 'Alligator' coming onshore, and the Marines dismounting.
Thanks,JarheadEd ,looks like a great place!
"Not lower level, arguably more violent."
Lyrics from Naked Raygun's "Rat Patrol" "What we need to take control,we could use the Rat Patrol. What's that coming over the dune?... Chasing the halftracks across the sandflats, got a nice pine box,for that desert fox, machine guns blaring, and Arabs staring wondering why,the Westerners are there. It's the same old story, and it'll happen again."
