Not that Im going to get one yet, but you can put sabots in a shotgun and unlike rifles here in the uk they can also be semi-auto.

Rifle ammo is lighter, you can carry more. If you want rapid fire, go for a lever-gun. If you really need semi-auto, it means your problems are up close and you would be better served by a handgun. What would you need semi-auto action for with 4 or 5 rounds at your disposal? I've got a Marlin-94 in .44 Mag. It'll take 12 cartridges and is good for roe-deer and rabbits, and is actually used for self defence against polar bears at Svalbard, so I think it'll cover the basics.

My best bet though is living in one of those few societies that are likely to get over "the bend" in fairly smooth fashion and come down on the other side with a functioning society.
