It will happen, sooner or later. Hopefully later.

You know many population predictions show a gradual decline in the population anyway, as nations industrialise and modernise. According to my a-level teacher this has been shown in scandanavian countries and is expected to occur in western europe.
'It is becoming clearer every day, as crises like global warming, water, soil and food depletion, biodiversity loss and the degradation of our oceans constantly worsen, that the human situation is not sustainable. Bringing about a sustainable balance between ourselves and the planet we depend on will require us, in very short order, to reduce our population, our level of activity, or both' This prediction is almost identical to the works of malthus, who predicted much the same long ago. A similar debate has occured between erlrich and simon: this can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon-Ehrlich_wager Now im not going to argue that this is necissarily incorrect, just that the historical precedent has not bourne out and this may well be much the same. It will be years and years to come before it's even close to overpopulation. The entire US population can fit in Florida, that is if it's completely filled

I think the question is how many people can the world hold at the wests rate of consumption. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "You can't blow the smoke from such a majestic stogie in just anyone's face. Indeed. The rest of the world should live on lower quality dirt, to free up resources for you. Good hunting, Cajun76 =USAF= (Ret) Magnum-PC.comCheck it, bleed. Bro... was ON! Didn't trip. The world is far from being overpopulated. Yes, the world's resources are being depleted but not out of necessity. They are being depleted by choice fueled by greed and selfishness.
For example, a discussion about cars I had with a guy the other day. We both travel at least 70km to work each day. I travel further, about 4,000km per month (3,000 for him). I don't have a car and don't want one. I use the public transit simply because it is much cheaper and saves a lot of time. He must maintain his car. He cannot do anything besides driving while traveling. Ca 2.5 hours per day lost. He pays insurance. He buys gas. He pays many transportation related taxes. He pays for parking. He gets stuck in traffic. I must maintain my shoes. I work while traveling train and therefore lose no time. I pay no insurance. I buy no gas. Any transportation taxes I pay are in the cost of tickets. I don't pay for parking. I don't get stuck in traffic. My overall monthly cost of traveling is a maximum 400euros. My carbon footprint is much, much smaller than his. My time is used much more efficiently. His argument? He has freedom. Interesting response coming from someone who works for his car. all the major industrial countrys have a negative birthrate if im not mistaken. this is not new, it has been observed as long ago as the 1920s, that as populations industrilize the birthrate drops. if i understand correctly the only reason the usa's population grows is because of immigration and the fact that immigrants and the 1st generatin following them have high birthrates, subsenquent generations then match the negative birthrate of the general population. |
