Moon Baby - Goodsmack

Way back when, I lived at Offutt AFB. They had an air museum at the back gate near the Wherry housing area. They had a B-36 there. One day in 70 there was a tornado that came through. Supposedly, a guy who lived off base was gonna watch it all in his picture window, that is until the B-36 started to take off, without a pilot.

To the southeast of the guardshack is the end of the old runway that had the air museum.

This is the MK 108 explosive round effect of a test Bristol Blenheim.

Woofie-Great sounding Merc.,that's too sweet.Nice NASCAR and B-29 pics too.

I see Pearson had pole position, and "The King" Petty next to him,but I don't remember Petty driving for Mercury. Blink

TheFamilyMan-Cool B-36 pic,kinda shows why they had a head,galley and bunks. Wink2

Monty_Thrud-Great Wellington and Halifax pics. Thumbs Up

Dance-That Sunderland is amazing! Thumbs Up

wayno7777-Wicked "Old Crow"pic.

WhiteKnight77-Cool story!!!
I'd hate to see a tornado-driven B-36 coming my way. Veryhappy

Richard Petty drove a Ford in 1969, the only year he drove something other than a Dodge before moving to Pontiac later on.

Esel, my pops actually saw that tornado from across the base (it came from the other base housing area near the front gate). Us kids were in bed and he went up on the hill behind the housing units and came running back down yelling to get the kids to the basement. The tornado did a lot of damage to the base tearing up 100+ year old oak trees on the mainside. Very impressionable on a 9 year old.

wayno7777... Fantastic photo of the P-51 Old Crow... beauty of a Warbird!

WhiteKnight77... Would have liked to have seen that B-36... the New England Air Museum suffered the same fate back in the late 60's and lost some of it's very rare aircraft that it had in it's display.

Monty_Thrud... very good to see you around and a great play list of tunes... also those photos of the Wellington & the Halifex are excellent. Thank's I just have s few disc's of the Cramps in my collection. Big Grin

Esel... wouldn't want to be gunner in that station at that moment. Surprised

Richard Petty

Dance... That is One Hec of a RC aircraft... wonder how it handels on take off with those 4 engies and that Sub looks like an 1940 French version that has a heavy gun? Quite the bird though... Thank's for posting.

WhiteKnight77-Thanks for the Petty info,I remember him as being a Mopar man, that's why I was suprised to see him in a Merc.

Monty_Thrud-I'll take #7,best derrierre, and she can hold her card right side up. Veryhappy

Woofie-Great vintage NASCAR pic.And keep your eyes on the mailbox starting in about 5 days(though it seems you're in a different country concerning the USPS)! Wink2

Whatever happened to the term "move West young man"? Too Happy
Just joking,in country as gorgeous as yours,I'd stay put, too! Cool

BARKEEP-Let's have several dozen Paulaner-steamed mussels, and keep the iced wash tubs of an assortment of beers coming!!! Thumbs Up

Check this: Shiner Smokehaus
Enjoy Shiner's Smokin' Sommer Bier!
Brewed with pale malt that's been smoked with native mesquite in the backyard of our little brewery in Shiner, Texas (pop. 2,070), this refreshing Helles-style beer has a smoky flavor that goes great with all the flavors of summer.

It may sound weird, but smoked beers have been a long tradition in Germany,Rauschbier.
That's gonna go good with a good 24 hr. smoked brisket!!! Thumbs Up

Esel... Two of the F-107A's [Man Eater as the crews called them] are still around in museums today.

The F-108 which was going to be an escort fighter for the B-70 "Valkyrie" bomber would have been a beauty of a aircraft.

The other Mach 3 Interceptor which on 28 September 1965 flying at Mach 3.2 and 75,000 feet, fired an AIM-47 missile at a target Q-2C Drone destroying the Drone at 20,000 feet.

To the courageous and brave men & women that have taken those steps into the unknowns of space over the years. But also to the event that took place fourty year's ago... and I can still remeber sitting glued in front of the TV watching those news broadcasts of the takeoff and the first steps of man on the moon.

The first man to walk on the moon. Clap

The first manned spacecraft landing on the Moon was at 3:17 p.m. EST on July 20, 1969, when the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, the Eagle, landed in Mare Tranquillitatis, located at 0°4'5"N latitude, 23°42'28"E longitude. The Eagle landed approximately 50 kilometers from the closest highland material and approximately 400 meters west of a sharp-rimmed blocky crater about 180 meters in diameter.

I was an 11 year old sitting in Yankee Stadium when they stopped the game and had the crowd rise for a moment of silence for the safe lunar landing. Watched the moonwalk at home that evening. Freakin' awesome still!!!

I had my first Shiner Smokehaus tonight, and it was great. The smoke flavor is much milder than some of the German Rauschbiers.
If it's offered in your area, give it a try!

Woofie-I wonder if the "maneater" reputation, might partially come from the over-head intake,or just lame flight characteristics.I realize the average rocket-boosted seat would get them clear, but it looks like the intake almost partially 'overhangs' the cockpit.

I wonder if it had special ejection seat mods, due to the overhead intake?

I can remember watching those Saturn V launches as a kid-and they were unbelievable.
I guess we need to thank Werner Von Braun for running away from the Russians, for those great memories.

Some photos of the 1948 National Air Races

Esel... haven't seen a Shiner beer in the area... but I'll ask the Packy owner if it is available for these parts.

The ejection seat for the F-107A was the same as the F-100 fighter: http://books.google.com/books?...t&ct=result&resnum=4

wayno7777... Great photo of the B-25 and that a real beauty of a warbird.
