Sorry, RegRag1977, Boris Johnson, mayor of London, is a Conservative...

It looks to me like that is a rocket gantry which is executed in a 'Kinda-Sorta Art Deco pseudo Post Modern' style. It could be that the British government teamed up with Richard Branson for a mission to Mars. Can you just picture that beautiful 'Virgin' logo tastefully painted upside the tower?
Or it could be an effort to improve relations between the UK and France. They already have the Chunnel, so why not have a tram service that is strung up between the Eiffel and the Mittal towers? |

I agree, my first thought was an electric pylon used to hold high voltage wires.

Isn't it a monument to say "Look at all the extra money we have to throw away"?

That, in a nutshell, is what most monuments are for. If you really want to impress someone, you make one, and then send it to them as a gift: |

Waterloo station was so called long before the Channel Tunnel terminus arrived, and that was only a temporary terminus. The actual terminus for tunnel passenger trains currently in use is St. Pancras. I believe there is an Austerlitz in Paris? Dire, dire monument. Red Star over Moscow meets pylon/home chain grimness. Funnily enough the neighbour was telling me about watching Hurricanes chasing 110s over Essex as a kid only last week. The pylons that nobody knew what were for were a keen target for the Huns but only after the war did he learn about why they were so interested in them. He had a chest full of bits of German planes but his brother chucked it out a few years ago before he died. I was agape. _______________________________________ Dum spiro, spero. |

"I believe there is an Austerlitz in Paris?"
...and a Stalingrad. "I was working on this skin for a week, and you post a picture of a damn turd right in my thread!" |

If you look at it, Eiffel Tower is equally hideous... Many Paris citizens of that time hated it with a passion and thought it was expensive, ugly and looked ridiculous.
Only because it could be used as a communication center, it was saved from being scrapped and sold. Decades passed before it was the Paris icon it is today. I don't say this to defend that London monstrosity. I say this to make French think again... and scrap their old Paris monstrosity. |
