Well I don't really like Bush, but he did promise to support Georgia a while ago.He must be feeling pretty p*ssed right now,as it looks like he is standing back and letting Russia run amok in the country. How far would he go if the Russians keep ignoring him?

That is a good question, and raises many others. Given our currently thin spread military hopefully not too far. Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard one in a way. We need to show support and meaning behind our words to back a supposed ally- however doing so in an over aggressive fashion would be akin to writing a check made of rubber... |

Didn't somebody in here propose airlifting georgian troops in Iraq back "home"?
I think that might be the best response the US has to offer without leaning too far onto either side. |

Not saying it's so but if Georgia is acting inappropriately in this matter how far should prior promises of support go? Weren't they the aggressors? Aren't they being accused (not formally ofcourse) of warcrimes as well as Russian soldiers?

I guess you gotta learn that "war crimes" ain't something only the "bad guys" do.
There's war crimes on all sides in ANY war. |

Pretty strong anti Russian statement from Bush about starting 'humanitarian aid' to Georgia, using US military forces to carry it out.Things could go pearshaped quickly with that.

The US action was to be expected, really. This is about keeping face, after all. Reminds me in some way of the typical cold war crisis, namely Cuba. Russia wants to test out how far it can actually go after gaining success after success in it's adventures lately. The US does not have a choice but to act if it wants to keep it's influence, else it will be seen as Paper Tiger.

Why? I do not see the sense behind that at all. Actually although I pretty much always support what US does, I would think they are retarded idiots if they would intterfere with this. When US and NATO attacked Afganistan did Russia interfere? When US nearly singlehandedly attacked Iraq did Russia interfere? Why would now NATO and/or USA interfere in Russian affairs? This is not about keeping face, this is about you don't f**** around with my buissness I don't f**** around with yours. Clean and simple. What do you think, you will say to Russia: "I can interfere in your buissness you can't in mine and I will do whatever I God d*** please and all you can do is bend over and take it with a smile!" and expect them to accept that? A good tactician will know when to start a trouble, a great one will also know when not to start one. . |

Ah but the USA is a declared ally of Georgia, and being an ally of the USA must count for something,or count for nothing.

If Russians were smart they would start hording toilet paper. Ukraine will be full NATO members soon.

Uther said it. They also have not so much interest in a Russia expanding it's sphere of influence towards the turkish border, though that is secondary in this regard. Still, the US already is seen as weakend both by the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and its overstretched military, and it's huge economic problems. If they also give way in international matters like in Georgia, the US will be severvly damaged. And in the background is still China waiting for it's chances.
