Presumably countries outside America have interesting or important things happening in their political life.
Anyone want to share some? It'd make for some variety, and we might all learn a bit about happenings in our little communities' home countries.
Out American mates are of course most welcome to post, but I intend the content of this thread to not include American politics as there is so much on that topic already.

Nothing much to report from the UK, just the usual mix of dodgy dealings and incompetance. I expect things will start to get more interesting in the run up to the general election.

Good topic. I find it interesting when others post about their home countries system of government. It's also comforting to know that other countries have similar problems with their governments that we in the US do!!

In Canada, a private members' bill will get it's second reading today. The bill proposes to throw out the gun registry requirement that owners of rifles and shotguns register their guns. (7 million gun owners). Indications are that the bill will pass. There will still be a requirement to register hand guns and other restricted weapons.

Gun registry became law about 15 years ago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Firearms_Registry)and was introduced by the Liberal Government. It has cost the Canadian Tax Payer over $1 billion and has been largely ineffective.

Yeah BG, the registry was inspired by the Ecole Polytechnique shootings here in Montreal a while back, it was a horrible day indeed. Sad

Lots of interesting (if typical) things going on around the world.

-Afghanistan appears to be as corrupt as ever. We have not made too much difference there.

-Iran cannot quell the growing dissatisfaction of it's middle class and educated. They threatened to severely punish any who did not chant the standard "death to america/ death to israel" at the rallies today.

-Pakistan's undereported fight against the taliban continues.

-Here in Kuwait they defense minister is getting grilled for promising to buy french planes that nobody really wants.

-And lastly, london's mayor (a politican, so it's related to the thread) is a badass. Good for him. Elect that man again londoners.

Welcome to my great country, Croatia! Where yesterday's ministers are today's defendants in court. And the ones taking their place are no better.

Here in the UK the defence ministry is trying to persuade us that aircraft carriers are essential to support our efforts in Afganistan. The navy presumably wants them, though they will probably have to fit them with wheels.

After changing the prime minister we (Croatia) are in good path to work a solution with our neighbours Slovenia regarding state borders (questionable sea borders).
We will probably soon be a part of European Union, so that wont matter much anyway.
