Not much, but :

Today i tested a mission with a MAV - Micro Air Vehicle, in both SP and MP.
I got very excited after succesfully managing the small flying vehicle to work 100 % fine in MP coop missions.
I also finished the public release of Sniper Team - The Longest Kill mod, to be released next week after the end of this tournament that had 64 sniper + spotter teams signed in.

I think it is due to lack of interest. The general apathy that fans have towards Ubi nowadays is indicative of the state of the community. This is the seccond GR contest Ubi has had with less than stellar results. Is it any wonder?

Oh, so you are supposed to actually POST it in the thread? I pm:ed my first class Wink entry to the RSE community developer kimi yesterday. The instructions weren't exactly clear..."submit"

Dang, Do I need to stick it in here? Blink

PS WK I do this for the honor of involved RSE devs and GR, (not for UBI) but I am aware it is their forum.

Not much to enjoy, I am afraid, but at least it was written in time for the deadline...but I guess a deadline is a very flexible term when it come to gaming industry Wink
--------------------------------------
My entry:
I’ll give you the truth, no glamour, no heroism, no extreme make over, just like GR was. This is what I did April 16, 2008:

I was awake most of the night due to my three small kids of whom two were suffering from a nasty vomiting disease - still slightly nauseous and recovering from the virus myself I had to run off to work late – no breakfast- sit off two long important meetings – trying to think and speak constructively, intelligently and pay attention - catch up with the pile of emails in my inbox needing immediate attention Typing – coming home to my wife in despair Truce (also downed by the stomach flu)– trying to convince her that April 16 is sort of a special day - Party Hat....No, of course not, I didn’t even try Nuh uh.

Back in 2001 when I fired up GR for the first time, I was actually unmarried, had no kids, had lots of spare time Big Grin, and was immediately hooked. Darn, that first mission was tense and the atmosphere truly amazing! Thumbs Up The scenery, the openness, the freedom, the wind in the trees, the damp grass with the footsteps from the patrol, the sudden scare by a dull…“THUD” and viewspin… Eek sniped from apparently somewhere, but where? Oh, this game is something different! Thanks RSE!
PS I Iove my family , don’t get me wrong In Love

So it's been a typical day in the life of an AAA quality developer, I guess! Big Grin

Argh...well, if possible please extend the Deadline for let's say 2 more days because then I'm going to relay the link of this thread to the german Forum Members AND put it on my newssite. You might get a few more stories that way. Wink2

BTW:

It only has to be a story set on this date? I mean, it doesn't have to be real or based on the first GR, right?

If so, here's the entry I previously sent via PM. If you should encounter any mistakes, please keep in mind that English isn't my native language. Smile

The package

April 16 - I won't ever forget this day. I still remember it as if all that would have happened yesterday. Up to that time, everything was going well. As usual I checked my Uniform, pulled it over my body and checked my hairstyle. Here I was. Ready for everything. Prepared to safe the world once more from evil forces like uh...tax inspectors, insurance agents or uhm...pantomimes. I no way I could have known what was going to happen.

The door bell rang. Quickly I reached for the next best object that was looking like a potential weapon and focused my view on the door. "Yes," I asked. "I have a package for you, Sir." Did they really think I would be that stupid and easily fooled by this old trick? I slowly headed to the nearby window and peaked through. "I'm coming right out of the shower and I'm not dressed yet so please lay it on the floor, I'll get myself dressed and then pick it up from there." No, they wouldn't get me that easily - not this time. "Uhm...as you wish, Sir," the man commented.

I heared him droping something carefully to the floor. The decision to simply open the door and get rid of the "package" grew stronger inside myself but just to make sure, that this was not another trap, I decided to wait 'til I'd hear the car driving off. Carefully I reached for the doorknob and started to rotate it. A small, white package lay on the floor. What might that be, I asked myself. My eyes checked the wrapping, to make sure there was no cable connected to it which could have triggered some kind of explosive charge as soon as I would try to pick it up - preventing my plan from taking place. Nothing. I bowed down and reached for the small parcel. Carefully I picked it up and went back inside. I placed it on the table and slowly removed the wrapping. The shadows created by the lightbulb over my head started dancing around, like creating a tension I've only come to know from Horror Movies and the adrenaline level inside my body started to rise. As I was about to open the lid, my ears became aware of a silent ticking. Oh my god - the four letter word came instantly to my mind. So that it was. That was how they planned to get rid of my - a timed bomb which would not only erase my own existence but also the people in the entire building - leaving no trace of evidence behind. No, I wouldn't give up that easily. Quickly I reached for the parcel dropped it into a sink and let the water do all the work - disarming the threat to the innocent lifes of all the people around me. I can't remember how long it took 'til the ticking stopped but to me it felt like eternity. Phew....that was close, I said to myself - reliefed of having escaped the Grim Reaper once more. I wiped the sweat off my face and reached for the hopefully disarmed package. Carefully I removed the lid and took a look inside. A small piece of paper lay on top of the previously ticking small, black object. The water from above had caused the tint to dissolve. Barely I could read the message:

Dear Mr. Mitchell,

thank you for the maintenance on our sink, as well as the outstanding friendship all these years. My husband and I decided to thank you for that by sending you this clock. Both of us hope you'll enjoy it, but please be careful because it's an old, individual item and as such very sensitive to environmental conditions.

Sincerely

Family Roberts
App. 34B

Well, maybe after all these years, I had spent in the military and various agencies, I had chosen the wrong job. Maybe becoming a second class Janitor hasn't been the best decision I had made in my life after my military career. Scott, maybe you should go back to your bed and catch some sleep, tomorrow you'll have a look for another job which might suit your skills better, maybe animal tamer or so, I said to myself and then I fell asleep.

I hope you enjoyed it and please don't take it too serious because I actually like Scott Mitchell's character but I just wanted to come up with a different kind of story (less serious). Big Grin

mmm... what i did on april 16, 2008 ? Lets start a few minutes before it, this is how i remember it...

April 15, 2330 hrs

I arrive the base (aka home), after having a meeting with some team mates (actually it was some pickup games with the friends, but that doesnt sound very GR, doesnt it?)
My commanding officer (wife, of course :P) was not happy about it, she thought i forgot we have a mission tonite. She brief me while taking a bath:
Primary objective: be the first to congratulate my son and give him a present. In order to do that i have to recover the hidden present from its location on a cabinet on the living room. It would be not an easy task as he's watching tv there. I must find a way to distract him and recover it without beeing noticed.

Secondary objective. Create a diversion to help my CO make up the b-day cake.
You'll be inserted fron the top floor and can get acces to the zone by the stairs, and will have help from my CO who will be inserted first.
Gear up and be ready by 2355 hrs!

Living room & kitchen schematics:
++++++++++ . . . . 1. Hidden present
+ . . . . . . .+ s . . . 2. TV
+ . . . . . . .+ t . . . 3. My son
+4 Kitchen .+ a . . . 4. Fridge

+ . . . . . . living room . . . .+
+ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . +
+ . . . . . . . . . 1 . . . 2 . . .+
+++++++++++++++++++++

April 15, 2355 hrs Go!Go!Go!Go!Go!
My CO already took her position on the kitchen, but already is having problems, as my son is helping her in the kitchen.
I enter the zone and watching he's already occupied, i go stright to the cabinet, but couldnt find it. Damn! the cabinet its not the right one! check and my son is still busy at the kitchen, proceed to check the next cabinet... I found it! I move it to an easy poisition for quick extraction, as im ahead of schedule... Now im heading to the kitchen... now, how i distract my son, without sending him back to the living room and let my wife put the candles the cake and lite them? mmm... ah! i give a signal to my wife to be ready and ask my son to look for something on the fridge! the moves a prefectly coordinated and my wife gets out with the cake and the candles. Now I ask my son to look at the stove and move back to help my wife... we have less than a min left and the mission seems it would be complete success... then it happens! my son recieves a call, it's a friend (female, of course, you would guess that) to wish him a happy b-day! Noooooooooooooooo! it's april 16th, 0000hrs and we got beat by a call just when we approached the target!
Anyway, we sing happy b-day with his frind on the speaker and headed back to the living room to eat some cake. After all, it was mission accomplished Big Grin

As I live on Mexico (us-central time), this all actually happend on april 16th Tbilisi time Smile

ps. hope you can see the "map" right... im having problems making it look the way it should

Today I woke up in the early part of the day with the sun just starting to put light in the sky. It is my favorite time of the day.

I am set up to baby sit for my older brother and his wife. They have two boys, but I will not see them until around 3pm today.

So I went to my dad's farm and got his pickup and trailer set up to haul his tractor back to their house, which is about 15 miles away. It takes about 30 minutes to drive with a full load.

They wanted me to help them with a side yard. Last year they filled in with some topsoil. They want me to grade it and plant grass seed. They do not want any grass seed, they want these new hybrid strands that are somewhat drought tolerant, do not require a lot of water, and yet maintain good color.

I am in the Kansas City area, so I when I got the tractor delivered to their house, I went on down to Planters Seed to purchase the specialty lawn seed. Planters Seed Company has been around for over 60 years in the Kansas City metro area. It is in the second or third generation of the family that runs it. They still have the original hardwood flooring which by now is well worn with the footsteps of many, many KC area gardeners and patrons; alot of traffic over the years. They have a good way with people and I like how they package up the seed when you purchase turf seed from the large bins they have behind one of the counters. I carefully look over the seed labels too, to make sure the seed I am getting is 0.001% weed seed (or less).

I got a blend of turf type fescue, champion rye (like they use in golf courses) and some blue grass. Although the old guy there said I would only need the fescue, I still insisted on a blend of the other varieties. I got a bag of 12-24-24 fertilizer, to stimulate root growth. I would have gone to the farmers market (which is burgeoning in the summer months with lots of people by 8 or 10 am), but it is still a bit early for farmers to be showcasing their tomatoes, watermelon and corn.

So with the goods in the car trunk, I made back to my folks house to begin putting a finish grade on the side yard.

I went slow with the tractor. Not too fast just putted around and moved the dirt so it would mound up near the foundation on that side of the house and made sure it was slopping away; to carry water away from the foundation. Smoothed the dirt around. Put the finishing touches on by noon.

Then I called my brother and told him to bring the boys over there. Had a sandwich. Something about the parents house, brings a sense of comfort. Even after all these years, fixing a sandwich in their kitchen has a way of soothing the spirit, or maybe it was a nice sunny day today. Anyway, after that bit of exercise and planning and work, I felt pretty good.

After lunch, I loaded the tractor back on the trailer and took it out to the farm and unloaded it all, unhitched the trailer and got the seed spreader and headed on back to their house again. Took time out to help my mother with some odd chores. She wanted some pots moved. No problem.

Got the seed out and then went to seeding this area I had just graded. Careful to leave a good amount of grass seed, so when the boys got there, they could seed the lawn. Of course, I seeded it like I wanted it and went ahead and put the fertilizer on it, but when they got there, I made out like I needed their help. And that set their motor on high. Those boys are so excitable at that age (8 and 5). They wanted to see in the bag of grass seed and hold the spreader and wanted to make sure they were holding it right. Careful to take turns and it was a surprising and tiny joy for me to cap the afternoon like that. Of course they still had energy and so we got out the nerf football I got them this last Christmas. They have been wanting to throw those footballs all winter!

I had a great time. The kids did too. I showed them how to catch the ball while running. They both have huge glasses to correct their vision, so they are often pushing the glasses back up on their noses, but it is something neither of us thought about, all afternoon. Toward the evening they finally managed to pluck one or two out of the air, while running a full speed. And that simple thing was a fun event for us all.

Soon I plan to take pictures of the lawn when it comes up and tell them they did a good job of helping me seed it. This fall, we will probably have some cook outs, in that area, and they will probably conduct races across the new turf.

Something about spending time with these children that lightens my spirits. Tough to explain, but as this day comes to a close, I am thankful for their exuberance and natural happiness. Sitting here at the pc, I wish this happiness was the thing that was lasting in my life. Well, wishful thinking, I know. I am sure of one thing though. I will get a good rest from all that got done today.

Peace all.
C4spr out~

WHAT is going on today?... (as written on 4/16/08)

Do you want to hear about the day that was my day? Here it is in a nutshell (and we'll get to that in a minute)...

I had a mason coming over to fix some pointing towards the top of my chimney and needed to hit an ATM for some ducketts to pay the man. Of course, the ATM at work was busted so I took a trip to my bank.

After I got my withdrawal and headed to the front of the bank I found a crisp $100 bill and picked it up. I was going to call the evil voice (wife) to talk me into keeping it but realized my phone was at work. Then I figured that I was probably being recorded by ten different cameras (I hope they got my good side... wait... what good side?) and that karma would get the best of me if I kept it. So I decided to ask for a manager and explain that I had just found this inside their bank.

I was greeted with a smile and look of amazement because anyone else would have kept it... I bet that manager had lunch on me today Frown

Don't get me wrong... If I had found that outside, I would have kept it... But I believe in karma. I thought to myself that if I kept it, the mason might tell me I needed a lot more work than originally estimated and would end up paying even more.

I felt good about the situation though because the bank is in a less fortunate neighborhood and if someone does call and say they left the bank and realized they were missing a Benjamin, they might get back their rent money (or Friday night fix). Ain't I an optimist about society?

I went back to work, called my wife and wondered if she would *****-slap me through the phone; but hey... it wasn't rightfully mine right?

The day goes on and I leave work a little early to come home and pay the mason. What greeted me outside was a baby squirrel.

And he is LITTLE! About the size of a small chipmunk. And I just couldn't leave him in the street of out parking lot Frown So I called up to a fellow employee to come down and check him out. I then called the wife and then the family vet to see if they could direct me to a wildlife helpline. All the while he was crawling on my bag, on my foot, and nibbling at my sneaker.

Of course, when I called that number, they had closed at 4 and would not be back till Monday. So, what to do? I looked in a dumpster and found a small box... scooped up the munchkin and took him to a nearby area with some trees and grass in hopes a bigger squirrel will help him out.

I had my friend go back inside and get a cup with water and some leftover cake to crumble up. While he was doing that I set up his box shelter near the tree. I then looked around and found an orange near a picnic table that I cut in half and left in the box for him.

I noticed another friend walking in the parking lot and called her over to see. We all stood around and the baby actually tried to climb the tree and got up a good 6 feet before perching up to rest.

I then saw an adult squirrel foraging nearby. I circled around to try and get it to go over by the baby as my friends backed away towards the parking lot and over by my car. I then hear the girl that I called over say "Oh my God! I just found $15 over here!"... to which I replied "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"

She mentioned that she was going to Foxwoods tomorrow and the money was well needed. Needed or wanted Wink you decide.

At that point I figured there was nothing more to do for the squirrel babe but hope for the best. I had set up a shelter with food and water and sent an adult in its direction. We all went to our cars and on our ways home.

I paid the mason and learned that the chimney was missing a two foot section of flue which caused the heat to destroy the brick from the inside. They replaced the section and fixed the bricks for the price they originally estimated.

Now I have a call in to our oil company for a cleaning and to see if there is any old flue at the base of the chimney that needs to be removed.

I think things happen for a reason... If the ATM was not broken I would not have gone to the bank and found that $100. Someone else may have pocketed it. If I had not left a little early that squirrel may have been splattered by a car leaving the parking area. If I had not called over my friend she would have gotten in her car and not found the $15. So, did these things happen today for a reason bigger than I could imagine? Was someone watching my deeds? Or am I just $115 poorer than I could have been?
