If you could have Reflections create a modding feature for the next Driver game, would you choose to make them create it? Do you favor the idea of user-generated content for giving players more creativity within a possibly already remarkable gaming experience? Then this is the right topic for you to discuss.
I truly favor the idea of modding. It can become an excellent way for players to learn to create tools & features for an already existing game. On the PC modding can be a very helpful way towards getting into the video game industry. If I could mod a game, I'd simply do it. And if I could get into the video game industry, I'd go through modding first. Driver can be so much more with a modding feature. Whether or not the next game will be spectacular and non-linear, a modding feature will ensure that players can really push a game further, maybe even more than the developer itself was able to make possible. Just imagine at how much the next Driver game could accomplish if it chose this direction. Self-expression => Innovative Gameplay => A Solid game that is art |

I'm not a hardcore PC gamer. But I think people should create 3rd party content for the PC version of the next Driver game. Making new vehicles, weapons, and locations that they can share with the rest of the world via the internet.

Didn't you hear that home gaming consoles may soon be able to mod games just as the PC? Where have you been? Recently, Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 was able to make mods, so what I'm saying is to have a Driver game, both for the PC and the consoles, with a modding feature. Now wouldn't that be awesome?

I guess that it'll be possible to mod games on the Xbox 360 if Unreal Tournament 3 for the 360 comes out with a modding feature like the PS3 & PC versions. Also, the team working on it, Epic Games, has high hopes of bringing modding to the 360 too. Therefore, it may soon come a time when video games will come with the ability to mod on both the 360 & the PS3.

Modify the gameworld with a few buttons on the 360 would be nice, but I can't imagine it could happen, then again, maybe it could fit into the film director section somehow.

It would be helpful, if there will be such features in the next Driver game. But GTA is a good example that the fans are smart enough to develop their own tools without the support from publishers and developers. And they work fine. There are many big communities out there creating great mods for all GTA games.
Sure, if Ubisoft Reflections would give the fans the tools to create their own content (that is: editors for creating new vehicles, maps, etc.), it would be a lot easier. But I don't think that this will be the case with the next Driver. It will be developed for consoles and then converted to PC systems. And at the moment the PC (the internet) is the place for sharing mods and new content for games, and not the consoles. |

modding sure is the future of gaming. It's also an ideal way of increasing the driver gaming community increasing revenues and sales.
I notice some of your are talking about modding console games, to do this without a pc this would be really simple modeling. I don't know how you could create a vehicle from scratch on a console. But I do understand it's possible with simcity style placing buildings and roads creating your own maps. But the PC platform sure is the future, this is where real game development comes in using advanced 3d modeling programs such as 3dmax which you can pick up on a education license for $200 and there are multiple free alternatives. A few great games I've played come with modding tools such as Max Payne, Postal 2! Professional modding tools I cannot wait to see such a tool for Driver. So if your reading reflections interactive (ubisoft reflections) it would be awesome if you could create some tools and plugins so we can mod driver. Something I've really wanted is for those people who only know 3d modeling is they can export there map into a certain file format via. a plugin you guys create which enables us to put it in a mod folder or something similar and directly from exporting it we can load the map up from the game. There are many other ideas I think about! I'll compile them all into one big document for you all to read once I have found sometime. |

I disagree with you, drivermadness, about how the PC is the future. If you happened to notice, the PC is starting to be filled with less hardcore gamers and that is making many of its games lack. In the 1990s, it was a very strong force. But when the year 2000 came, it started to grow smaller. I know, however, that the PC is the platform that usually first comes up with new content for games. It is where multiplayer began. Modding also began here. But soon afterwards, the home gaming consoles found the feature of multiplayer. Modding has a matter of time before it gets itself into the hands of a console. I'm not necessarily saying that it'll happen very soon, but I'm sure someone will want be interested enough that the feature will be brought to a system. And MMOGs may, too, come, but it will take a few years before it is possible to make them as good as those of the PC. The PC is where gaming is born, but the home gaming consoles are its evolution and are the successors of the PC.

All games should feature modding, almost like an editor mode, where you can change anything you want in the game, and see if the engine can handle it. Of course it would mostly appeal to the creative people who wanted to spend time on such a modding feature. I'd like it.

Yes, I truly agree with you. And I hope that developers will soon learn how to make it possible on video game consoles. Right now, I believe that those who will be able to pull it off will be the developers which were known for creating PC games and have had a modding community. This is why Epic Games, creator of both Unreal and Gears of War, was able to pull it off for the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament III. I think that Valve, creator of Half-Life, Portal, and Team Fortress 2, can achieve this too because they've had plenty of experience of seeing mods appear on their games. Maybe with more PC developers joining the home gaming consoles, they'll be sure to bring modding into the consoles too.

Nodding features that let you change the amount of vehicles onscreen, times of day, amount of buildings, car physics, appearance of the character would be a start. I'm sure they could ad weather and snow mods, zombie crowd mods, etc.

When you really think about it it's really hard to work with a consoles controller to design buildings, vehicles, trees, ect. To do this you need commercial software which hundreds of developers have worked on for the past 10 years. But a simple editor will work perfectly for consoles. When modding PC games we want the more complicated option by exporting models from 3d modeling programs such as 3dmax with exporting plugings. If anyone here as achually opened up one of these programs you'll notice how complicated it is and how much you can do with it. You have so much freedom and you can only do this on a pc and you will only ever be able to have this much control on the pc. You also have to think about the time it takes to learn and master these programs, I've been learning 3dmax for almost 200hours now and I've learn't how to model a low-poly game character which took me 5 hours to model. With the consoles on the other hand there should be pre-made buildings that you can stick together. On the modifying sector of gaming, pc will always own! Because programmers, graphic artists and so on will have so much more control. This is a topic I could discuss for hours but I'll leave it at that! |
