Is it any wonder there are so few updates? Many of you don't read what's posted on the releases given anyway. LOL It's not like he buried the comments about the colour and landscape details. It's within the first few sentences.

But alas it IS called the Zoo for a reason.

Go check out IC forums. Oleg has made some replies to the criticisms. One thing he mentioned is that the landscaping was done on a computer with a monitor that had an un-saturated display. So, to us it is looking over-saturated.

Well, that solves a lot right? Smile

"NEW LCD types are not too saturated... real thing is that old LCD was out of neccessary range for saturation and deep of colors
Its why we now look to some old digital photos as it is so suturated on new LCD....
Author of such shots tried to saturate on old LCD... then we get now resul of too saturated colors and some time contrast on moder LCD that have more right range of all these things."

"That will be later. Technolody that we are using should be tuned finally, then we need to correct the saturation for this technology. The thing only around this.
Its why I told that don't take in account these colors in the head of dev. update.
Even scales of some trees and grass will be other. "

"1. First of all would be good to read the header of dev. update. I will show Britain when it will be ready. Don't you think that others also didn't show the map a year before release?
2. Terrain [in BoP] isn't bad, yes. But we have already better in detail with the close look. Remember, I told not only about controlable aricaft in future...."

Jeeps? Tanks? Destroyers? Submarines? Is Oleg simulating an entire Universe?

In any case, I won't complain if the trees look like cardboard cutouts, and the grass is florescent orange. Nice graphics are only a small part of the package, and to my mind less important than many other things - if you are flying online in a Fw190D at zero feet, with two Spits taking turns to perforate you, admiring the scenery is not a high priority.

For those of you who have not entered the murky waters of Silent Hunter, I would point out that for real 'immersion' (pun inevitable), there is nothing like diving below rated max depth to avoid circling destroyers, and using nothing but the sonar map, and your ears, to avoid the depth charges. The best graphics are in your imagination: 'Ping, chugga chugga chugga, PING, chugga CHUGGA CHUGGA PING CHUGGA chugga chugga... BOOM!... BOOM!... BOOM!... , "das boot ist gertakkin der pounding herr Koloin"... chugga chugga chugga, ping' (Apologies to any German speakers, but you know what I mean).

Edit---------
More words from the Creator on the SoW Universe:

'The water is traspatent. From underwater you may see something.'

'I especaiily don't show all things on this map that we have there for demostration of 3D engine features that never was present in any sim and are useful also for the ground-water-underwater based gameplay.'

Maybe my dream of playing Silent Hunter vs IL-2 might come true...

I tried that once. Spent two hours in real time trying to escape a pair of destroyers. Kept the view in first person the whole way through. Scared me sh*tless to be honest. So much so that when I was eventually killed, I never repeated it again.

Unfortunately, Oleg is too much of a technician, and Luthier is too much of a gamer to be able to bring a similar level of immersion to their product.

I consider IL-2 to be fairly immersive:

Try full real settings and turn off your HUD logs unless you are using a bomber w/ the programmable bomb sight. Sometimes I have to fly an hour to target and back in close formation in a Chaika loaded with bombs or rockets, hugging the terrain, looking for targets and anything else of opportunity. Then suddenly some Bf-109 Es come screaming in from above out of the sun and completely nail you and leave you struggling to find a flat area to land in a sea of forest. Occasionally at the low altitude I might get lost, but then stumble across a couple of trains or convoys which are not on the objective list, but that I'm going to stop from raiding the Motherland anyway. I don't aim to get a kill every mission, I just hope to survive and make it to the next.

I get an adrenaline high playing this game.

It's the online for me that becomes problematic in terms of immersion Indifferent There's only 1 full real server, and even there few work as a team.

I'm confident that SoW, even if not a huge leap, will be better than IL-2, which is currently the best Smile

How can you say that? By far the most intense feeling that a Game has ever given me is that adrenaline rush as you are hit in a full real server and you dont know where from.

Total immersion. You can almost imagine how the real WW2 pilots felt as they were bounced.

"Over Dieppe, the wing was immediately bounced by a hundred FW 190s and a few Me 109s. I heard Johnson effing and blinding as he broke 610 into a fierce attack. I was hard at it dodging 190s, but I found time to speak sharply to Johnson about his foul language." - WingCo Jaime Jameson 12 Group Spitfire

I say it as someone who has played Il-2 on full switch for years, on and offline. I thought so too for a long time, but the Silent Hunter series did it better. And I'm not even that into submarines.

I have to agree, no sim I have played to date can suck me into it as much as Silent Hunter 4 has.

I think a lot has to do with it's slower pace, and the fact that it is a far more cerebral game to start with.

Air combat in a sim is a gun fight at 400 mph. Bang! You are dead.

Submarine engagements are a chess match, played with small needles. The death of a thousand pin pricks, over hours of time.

And it is a beautiful game as well...

For Christmas sakes!
My first flight sim was an arm chair. My Mom wondered why I was sitting in it with my hand between my legs making engine and machine gun sounds!
I had read The Hurricane Story and Thunderbolt!
I WAS dogfighting!
Who else has done ww2 aircraft like Oleg?

If it weren't for the end of the Cold War he and his programmers would be busy at work on real life killing machines. And that my friends would suck.
If these sims/games no longer do it for you...well for what you spend on hardware you could get/build and ultra-light. Fly a glider, or at least do a tandem parachute jump.

Does Oleg and his team's every decision match my desires and interests? Heck, no. But I'm grateful for the chance to pretend I am a WW2 fighter pilot. I really enjoy Oleg's games.

I really appreciate the people who share my interest and are usually much more knowledgeable about everything than me.

My only real regret about Il2 on is that I have given far more money to a bunch of anonymous hardware manufactures than I have to Oleg and his people simply to be able to enjoy these games. I mean, seriously, it just is not fair. I have spent, ugh, more than a thousand $ probably on joysticks, video cards, new computers that I otherwise did not need, just to play a $50 piece of software!
And I have learned so much from folks like Bearcat, LelBillfish (sp?) and others.
I am not a fanboy, but who else does anything close to what Oleg and his team do?

Seriously, the whining is annoying. Stop it. If you want to influence the final product, just say "i personally am interested in/ concerned about......"
I did this when I had concerns about the Jack's cockpit/bullet proof glass. Turned out...they were already on top of the issue I was concerned about.
Benefit of the doubt folks...that's what civilization is.

At least you had first-person bail outs. Smile

There are many Il-2 users of little imagination and even less artistry that cannot conceive of what it means to have a truly immersive experience. The two utterly basic mission perameters in the Il-2 series - shoot at planes or drop some bombs, are not as good as it gets. FM or DM won't do it for you either. Doesn't matter how detailed it is.

As much as I hate to bump an old thread, read through this and try to imagine what a truly next-gen sim could be.

Thumbs Up

SHIV is a parade example of how the right combination of music and artwork makes the game menu so atmospheric that it translates into the whole game, combined with a great sim in itself it makes for a killer combination. A department IL2 was and still is sorely lacking.

Of course we want what 'we can imagine', but most of us realise the limits of making a PC game in this era, particularly a flight sim. Its really easy to create a 'I want' list. Very very VERY hard to implement it into a game. It should only take a childs brain to understand this.

Just copying an IL2 aircraft or terrain, with SOW BOB's detail is going to take more than 5x the time. Do the maths.

Its not that people dont have the imaginatiion and 'cant understand', its because they DO understand and they realise the scale of what Maddox is doing.

How many WW2 flight sims are in development right now? How many other companies have attemted this in this era? It would be so much easier to give in and make another console flight game.

I liked the Silent Hunter series.
It is much different than IL-2 and I agree it is more like a chess match.
Trying to elude destroyers by going deep and on batteries at 3 to 4 knotts is nerve wracking.
