Since the cat is out of the bag, and, since the policy is to allow discussion of the mod, I will discuss. I have it. I think it is fantastic. To me it has been the wonderful final touch which Peshka and 46 were not for me. I thoroughly enjoy the 110C-4/B (which does have a rear gunner, by the way). I haven't been to an airshow since I left the UK in '95 so I cannot comment on the fidelity of the sounds, but they sound great to me, and are far superior to stock Maddox sounds. They also seem to have put some added kick into the force-feedback---when I am hit, the noise is terrific, and my stick really kicks. I'm not wild about the transplant cockpits, but a phony 'pit flyable MS406 beats none at all. To be brutally frank, if I can find the link to the 6 DOF mod for IL-2, I'm whanging it right into the program. I've had no "issues" with the sound mod; it has been smooth as glass. I wish Oleg had given us these airplanes---I mean an E Front sim with no flyable Hs 129, come on! And, there are plenty of sources for 129 cockpits. In sum, I'm now, once again, pleased as punch with IL-2, but it is not thanks to 1C.

Gee there seems to be a schism brewing here: those who embrace this unofficial mod, and those who reject it by realizing its implications are larger then just better sound.

Beginning of the end for online?

I hope not.

To each his own I guess.

I am aware of hard-core onliners who use the mod as well as off-liners.

Let's see how Oleg responds.

Personally as an offliner I'd MUCH rather resources be spent on BoB. AI in IL2 is soooooo long in the tooth it's decayed roots are showing. I still really love the game, but we need BoB to be released MUCH more than a sound patch for IL2.

Lets see if Oleg lets this slide. Somehow if his past actions are any indication I doubt he won't do anything.

So we wait for BoB because an A55HAT can't refrain from making an illegal patch availible. See it doesn't just affect online.

I'd venture to say if Oleg does correct this that it affects his bottom line too.

I'm definitely not in-the-know on this one, but would like to be. Is it a forbidden topic, or a discouraged topic?

Sound has always been an issue with me and as one who prefers offline, what you are talking about seems very interesting. Please fill me in. If you can't do it here, there's always PM.

Thats unfortunate...it means the further delay of BOB SOW...while Oleg has to sort this out. Hopefully he won't spend to much time. This may just be the time to let the IL-2 series slide down the abiss and onliners to move on.

The only things I'd like to improve would be the sounds and some eye-candy, especially objects and topography. Anything else, such as flight and damage models, I wouldn't even think of touching. I wouldn't bother making AI planes flyable either. In my opinion, we have too many flyables already.

If only there was some kind of 'happy medium' where those who wanted to mod, could, but could maybe not go online with it.
I also use the sound mod, it is much better than the stock, I'm very seldom online, but when I am, it is with my 'stock' iL2 version.
Would be great if 1C could implement some kind of 'modded exe' version, which online servers could recognise and stop these from joining.
Ah well, lets see what the future brings...

Alas, the place where I got the link got zapped. Maybe one of the other users of the sound mod will come forward to help those who are asking about it.

All development on the Il-2 flightsim seem to have ceased. It would look good from Oleg if he officialy released some tools so that the community can edit Il-2 to their likings. This might also have some publicity value for UBIsoft as well. I'll gues he needs to keep the FM and DM hardcoded to keep everything balanced. But there is nothing wrong with changing sounds and having maybe having a few add-on aircraft that never really made it in to the game to this date. (Spit Mk.14 Fokker D.XXI Curtiss CW.21 Falcon etc. etc. etc.)

Decompiling of the source for IL-2 was not only illegal, but has opened the game for a multitude of hacks that can be, and probably already are, used online.

Even the simple sound effect and cockpit replacement hack can easily be modified by the end user to modify or eliminate sound effects at will (I've done it, it's easy). This has obvious implications for any serious competitive online play.

It's quite possible that other elements of the game are already subverted, like areas of flight model or damage model, or possibly the views. We've already seen videos where the pilot's head can be thrust out of the cockpit model. This may be happening in full real servers already (or may have been for a long time).

Make no mistake, this is literally the end of IL-2 multiplay, unless Oleg and crew come up with something. Decompiled, any part of the game could be hacked, and apparently the server makes no checks when the player joins a server. It's sad enough that this had to happen to such a successful game, but even worse when it is condoned by the people who play it.

The lesson of the sound mod is that, while many think IL-2 is nifty, they do not think it is perfect. There are some who think it is---good for them.

P.S. For Oleg to be expected to devote his energies from now until the crack of doom to keep an archaic sim airtight from hacking is just plain ridiculous, and one eventually will have to ask in all these online games---what price online?---because hackers will get into the programs sure as death, and, in the case of IL-2 and most flight sims, most of the users are offline. Thus, should everyone be forced to service the needs of the online players? Question needs to be answered.

I doubt it, however this will be a benchmark for SOW. If places like hyperlobby are abondoned (which I'd have to see to believe), then it won't bode well for SOW.

I don't have the sound mod, but I have seen the vids and they seem impressive. But I'm personally not that botherd and would be happy for the game to stay locked shut.
Just IMO. Smile

When you condone this sound mod
You condone all the subsequent cheating hacks
that go with it. "Its only a sound mod" is trying legitimize a modified game code. Locked game code is what most of wanted. Go play MS flight sims plenty of mods over there.
Cant wait to see nuclear .50 cals!
If you fail "speedcheck=2" on my server, make no mistake you are a cheater.
You cheated 1C & UBI
You cheated this community from having a hack free game.

It's illegal AFAIK, and this IS the official forum of the Publisher for Europe and USA. UBI may not be so impressed by a sound mod Wink

Absolutely agreed.

It's amazing how many excuses people try to find to put a blind eye to the bigger evil hiding behind the "innocent" and "community friendly" mods. Smile
