Just wondered since some of you have got it installed already. What is your opinion of it?

Frustrating so far. Installed, and when I tried to run the game I get....nothing. No hard disk access, the cd whirs for a few seconds and then nothing. Task manager shows no IL2 activity. It just doesn't start. It was a clean install I had ready for this moment. I'm currently uninstalling, reinstalling etc, hopefully that will sort it out.

You probably need old mg_snd.dll and
mg_snd_sse.dll . That's known problem with some sound cards.

Just to be sure, we can apply the official patch over a current 4.09beta mod version. Also will the little AAA version switcher program still work?

I-16 Type 5 is a lot of fun to fly, if useless against some of the more contemporary aircraft in the sim. No supercharging at all and a fixed propeller pretty much limits your chances against the "later" planes, but against opposing aircraft of its own generation it dominates! Looks good with the enclosed canopy, too.

Graphically, I noticed a conspicuous amount of mip-mapping in the aircraft models, much more so than there used to be.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll be sure to try them out.

It was a 4.08m clean install, the only addition was that Battle Over Europe was also installed, but I can't see why that would make a difference.

Back to real life, I'll be looking at this again in a couple of hours.

I must be missing something with the SM79 as it seems the gun positions dont allow me to fire the guns in any meaningful way, they fire but no aiming is possible so any help/info would be appreciated.
other than that its looking good so far.
Edit, never mind found it Red Face

Yes, the SM 79 has some interesting features, and a good look at the new manual is well worthwhile. Probably a good idea with the other new aircraft too.

I've got to go out for a bit, boo hoo! Frown Have to come back to my new toys later.

Wow SM.79 is tough! Too tough maybe, at least for light machineguns (which were main armament of the fighters that faced it in pre- and early-war period - like Gladiator and Hurricane). It's incredibly fire-resistant.

Apart from that - a beautifully modelled aircraft! Cockpit, gunstations and that antique bombsight, just wow. Love it. I'm sure it'll be an instant fav online. It takes just a bit to get used to dual-pitch engines. Also, the two SAFAT HMGs facing backward do have a punch, especially versus weak Hurris inline engine.

No one in sane mind ever turns when he has any other option.

Thanks, FatCat, it's worked perfectly. The Slovakia winter map and the Avia are fantastic.

Right, the kids in bed, my wife is out, I have a couple of cans of Greene King and I'm set for the night!

Had a few quick test flights:
Avia B534 is a peach. No rudder trim, but otherwise no problems. Turns on a sixpence. A doddle to land, and if you come in too high (I did), it feels safe in a full-rudder sideslip.

I did a proper 'test pilot' job on this. Selected 'Scramble' in the QMB for an airfield takeoff:

The I-16 type 5 seems ok too, though I was slightly confused by starting in a hanger (Slovakia winter map). Made a pigs ear of the landing, though:

THe automatic flaps on the SM 79 take a bit of getting used to, I think they cause slight pitch changes as they deploy. If you just rely on staying level and throttling back, it seems to settle out ok, and handles well at low speed.

There are some nice skins too:

Time to give the Fokker a proper test I think: I need a target...
