Hi
On a trip to Queensland, Australia recently I came across these chaps. NQ Warbird Adventures. They have restored several trainers and give flights in them. CJ-6A Nanchang CA-25 Winjeel AT-6 Harvard Their latest project which caught my eye is a P-40. At the time of my visit it was still several weeks from completion unfortunately. They have removed the fueltank behind the pilot and are installing a seat for a passenger. More to come as time allows This message has been edited. Last edited by: gizmo60, |

The P40 air intake is quite the marvel. Amazing how dominate a feature that cowling is. You really notice it when it's removed.
Thanks for posting, very nice shots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Aces" as your typical lame west-allied "5 victories"-aces? ~Bremspropellor "109Z flew briefly, after being hit by a bomb. Nice pics
Can you tell what type of engine is fitted on that P-40? Bear in mind that I know squat about these things |

IMO that is no restoration.
That is a reclaimed dataplate to justify a new build. Brand new airpllane, a replica. Vinnie |

I'm afraid the only thing I know about the engine is about the spare they have... |

These few are from another military museum across the road.

That's nice... I'm not some engine expert but this one looks pretty nice for 63 year old.
It also seems that this is an original engine for P-40N??! However higher powered Alison, tho At least from what I googled. |

The P40Ns were the fastest production model of the Hawk 87 series. 368mph @ 20,000ft.
The earlier P40s (Hawk 81 series) had 1100hp Allison V1710s. However, in service in both the Pacific and North Africa, ground crews changed the gearing of the superchargers to yield between 66" and 70" hg of manifold pressure, giving the V1710 somewhere around 1700hp at sea level. Bet we'll never see that properly modeled in any sim. _____________________________ "Everything seems new to those too young to remember the old and too ignorant of history to have heard about it." - Thomas Sowell |

Just like you'll never see any sim simulate what happens if you throw a bearing, window a block, blow a head gasket, float a valve, ping, or knock an engine I'll be honest, I'll take slightly less power in favor of not having to deal with any of the above. |

You are of course assuming that the engines were not reliable, which is wrong on your part.
The V-1710 was the most robust water cooled V type engine of the war. It was very under stressed in it's original 1100 hp version. In fact most Merlins used in air racing today use connecting rods from the Allison because they are far stronger than the original Rolls Royce ones are. Both Merlins and DB engines approached and or exceeded the HP levels of the V1710 at the boost levels I mentioned earlier, I see no complaints about them. Oh, but I forgot, those are European engines and hence far better than American ones are. _____________________________ "Everything seems new to those too young to remember the old and too ignorant of history to have heard about it." - Thomas Sowell |

Yeah, the Euro Shoulder Chip gets to be a bit thick in here sometimes.
To the Caped Data Plate complainer, who cares. Another P40 is being crafted so I give'em an attaboy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Aces" as your typical lame west-allied "5 victories"-aces? ~Bremspropellor "109Z flew briefly, after being hit by a bomb. Whereabouts is the data Plate ?
I've looked and looked but for the life of me can't see it. |
