Before IL-2 Sturmovik came along I was deeply involved in playing the platoon level computer game called East Front II by Talonsoft. Does anyone else remember this game?
I'm curious because there were many user-made scenarios that recreated battles on the east front. I had downloaded many of them but have unfortunately lost them. I think some of these scenarios would be helpful in building IL-2 missions. By chance, would anyone have a collection of these old scenarios? Help a fellow grognard *** 80% of all German casualties in WW2 were on the Eastern Front. *** Missions I've created are here: http://www.freewebs.com/czecht...turmovikmissions.htm , http://www.flying-legends.net/ , http://mission4today.com/ , Netwings.org |

I have that one or the first East Front and one of the West Front series but somewhere along the DirectX and hardware
changes the last few years they give me video problems so I uninstalled them. Only tactical level ground war games I have that run now are the Steel Panther remakes. Not Talonsoft but at least they run for me. The Wargamer -- scenarios download page. I guess you might call this page PAYDIRT. The EF2 scenarios appear scattered through the 26 pages of list there, makes me happier to have spent the last over 30 minutes digging! It's not as easy as it used to be, that's for sure! M_gunz, thank you for the links. This is exactly what I was looking for. Nostalgia is bringing me back but IL-2 will always be #1.

i still play ef2,but "new" world in flames ver, does not play some of my fav scenarios from the original(i gave away mine hoping a buddy would play).i still have some scenarios dl'edlet me know if your looking for 1 in particular,i may have it.cheers.
After it was refeuled i climbed in.With many manipulations the mechcanics started the turbines.I followed their actions with the greatest of interest. The first one started quite easily.the second caught fire.In no time the whole engine was on fire.Luckily as a fighter pilot i was used to getting quickly out of the ****pit. The fire was quickly put out.The second plane caused no trouble - Adolf Galland (first time in a ME262) |

Wow, as a kid I loved the old board games, this game was an early extension of them. In fact I still play with a good mate online we use play by email and a game can last a long time as you only have a turn when you are free for a beer and a think.

Can you email the folder with all your scenarios? That would be easier, i think. |

I saw one in 68 but didn't get to play. In 72 I got a Simulations Publications Inc game, a paper map, counters and rules in the magazine (rather it was a magazine with game) in a plastic bag at a mall bookstore -- and I was hooked. Then a friend saw it and pulled out his Avalon-Hill Battle of the Bulge he couldn't get anyone to play... so few local players back then with the Vietnam War going on. My first Avalon-Hill was Panzerblitz but the best was the Squad Leader series. And I kept buying the SPI issues, cheaply made games but good content and a focus on how the games worked. I still have a few A-H games stored away. The first really good PC versions I saw were the Panzer General and then Steel Panthers series. Dunno when EF came out, I didn't see them till later. The Operational Art of War is IIRC another Talonsoft with that boardgame view. Have you ever tried Hearts of Iron or HoI2? |

I still have a cupboard full of the old games. Loved the Avalon hill games, I think the African Campaign was my favorite of this lot.
I also remember the old games in a magazine and have a truck load in a box still. I can remember taking over the lounge room at home during school holidays and setting up monstrous battles with squad leader, not to mention enormous campaigns with the Fire in the East series. Never tried HOI. Any good strategic games out these days? Most seem to be real time spam fests, fun for short term satisfaction but I still enjoy the old tactical / strategic aspect of the turn based board games. |

My first "air war" sims were SPI games. It's all we had and almost criminally crude!
Check this out: The Operational Art of War III It is very much like the old board games.
I only have the original, this 3rd version is much improved. Note the site that review is from -- StrategyInformer. It makes HOI2 battles look like beer and pretzels. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOI2 is not a details game though there are realism mods. You have generic divisions of different types with possible 1 attached brigade and leader (with skills/traits) fighting in continuous action. You have pause and time scale control with day and night. You have a world map of 'county'-size areas and multi-level zoom on it. You have sea units and transport and air units and in the right conditions you can drop paratroops or marines can storm beaches. You can limit the game to a battle or go for the campaign where nations develop tech to gain access to units and doctrines to boost unit capabilities. In campaign you have a whole trade and diplomacy level with hidden cargo ships and escorts that can be disrupted by enemy units, you have to run patrols and anti-sub warfare even aerial sweeps. You have to keep garrisons especially in captured counties and can attach MPs as well as other brigades to keep the peace or enemy units will spring up. To say it gets complicated is understating badly. A full campaign runs 100's of hours. |
