quote:
Those lamenting the lack of a PC port for Gaijin Entertainment's well-received IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds Of Prey need no longer be sad, for the developer has announced a PC-exclusive combat flight sim called Wings Of Prey, which sounds very much like an enhanced port, sans the IL-2 name, right down to Jeremy Soule's musical accompaniment:

"Wings of Prey" is based around the large-scale aerial combat and ground military operations of World War II. Players can participate in some of the war’s most famous battles piloting fighters, battle planes and bombers across a range of thrilling missions. There are six theatres of war to engage in – The Battle of Britain, Stalingrad, Ardennes, Berlin, Sicily and Korsun' representing the main airborne battles of World War II in Europe.
“Wings of Prey” also boasts an all new damage effects engine as well as advanced environmental visuals enriching the game play. “Wings of Prey” features hundreds of airplanes taking part in air battles. The unique environmental engine also produces highly detailed, realistic landscapes that allow players to see breathtaking ground support actions.

Game Features:

Authentic World War atmosphere: Cutting edge technologies with highly detailed visuals bring the epic battles to life;
Engage in more than 50 missions from famous historical battles over Eastern and Western Europe;
Historically accurate aircrafts: Experience over 40 planes including fighters, battle planes and bombers. Learn to master Spitfire, Mustang, Messerschmitt and many more;
Flexible difficulty level system: from arcade to realistic simulation;
Downloadable content support: more planes and missions are coming next year;
Support of 6-DOF TrackIR, TripleHead2Go, Saitek and Thrustmaster joysticks, mouse and voice headsets;
Thrilling multiplayer: 4 game modes to choose; VoIP, lobby game system, leaderboards, friends lists, join-in-progress and host migration features provide great experience;
Realistic sound effects and original music from Jeremy Soule

Historically accurate aircrafts

This game is a must for the childrens

Wow, that's news! thanks for posting . . .

It'll probably require a beast of a PC . . . But can't wait to see what the specs would be and if I can run it . . .

I wonder how customer support and internet capability will be like. And will this get the same love that IL-2 1946 is getting?

I notice they said "Sans IL-2 name" because Oleg didn't back it?

I notice on the video you can recognize the IL-2 damage pattern (on the salamander) Smile

Any idea when this would be ready for purchase? It could be something of a substitute for Christmas,seeing that SOW is not going to be ready until sometime in 2010?....Cheers. JM.

Dec 29, 2009. At least that's what the liner notes said under the preview video.

So Youplay got the publishing rights instead of 777 Studios? (I'm assuming it's the same project he informally announced) That's too bad. Wish that Jason was able to secure them.

I'd be interested in hearing the difference in the PC verses 360 versions. I may pick it up just for the eye candy.

Wings of Prey is an odd sort of nonsense phrase that makes no real sense in English. Is this another Russian developer?

Me too. It will hopefully have at least some of the diversity and realism of IL-2 with flashy graphics. This is good news!

I can see this being a good start point for new guys to flight sims with PCs, but those of us who already have IL2, i`m not sure of the point.

My friend bought the Xbox version due to my recommendation, so I`ve seen it. Nice graphics but that`s it, although, that said, Realistic on the Xbox is actually quite close to the full real difficulty on IL2. I gave it a try to show him how not to stall out. Weird playing it on a control pad, though...unnatural.

You can get a joystick for the 'box. My friend has BoP and it is pretty good... for a console sim. But there just aren't enough buttons to support all the commands that you see in the PC versions (forget about CEM). Most of the missions don't involve takeoff and landing BTW, but the action itself is pretty solid.

Lemme get this straight, take the best flight sim on PC ever made, port it to consoles, port the console version to the pc, and expect it to be good? I guess I'm just odd this way but I'm kinda surprised at the positive response this concept is getting here. Nothing on you guys, but this pc-console-pc port job kinda makes me angry. It's a little insulting to the masterpiece that is il2 don'tcha think?

Meh, just my opinion.

Yeah it would really need the quality and realism and attention to detail that Il-2 has to make it worth buying. I read some reviews of the console version and it sounds ok, but sounds like it was kind of watered down for the console market, which isn't surprising. BOP didn't have anything to do with Oleg's crew other than the Il-2 name or so I've heard.

A bit pointless imo as there are a few arcadey flight games out there: heroes over europe/pacific, blazing angels and hawx.

I have very little hope of this being good as a game, but it can bring more people into flight sims. Sims are a duying breed simply due to the learning curv. If this helps bridge the gap, bring more people into sims, then it will lead to better sims. Its a win in the long run even if it is not a good game for the hard core.
