Hey- anyone ever tried using a Vizux display visor to play IL-2/1946?
See it here: http://www.vuzix.com/iwear/products_vr920.html

The compatibility chart SAYS it's compatible and comes with 3DOF already.

I think it looks tres cool. If I ever get that much mad money, I might do it, but was wondering if any of you had already tried it.

Cheers

Triad

No, I have not tried it.

I'm already using 6DOF with TrackIR 4 so swithcing to 3DOF may be a dissapointment.

But if you do decide to purchase it you will need to change your name to Cyclops and join the X-Men.

I'm using the 6 DOF Trackclip Pro, but I have to admit I'm intrigued by this gizmo---very intrigued.

If you like playing Il2 at Television resolutions - then this is the gizmo for you.

Seriously, we're a couple of years out still before these things (that pop up every 2 years) are worth the box they ship in. Sorry to rain on the hope parade. :/

Ah- no rain here Dustysquareback Smile Just thought it looked interesting. And too, the next gen of this type of gizmo may likely be less expensive I'd hope.

The specs says it will play at 800x600 or 1024x768. I know my video card does a lot better than that anyway.

Looking at the Natural Point website (I also have TrackIR3,) it looks like IL2-1946 only supports pitch and yaw anyway.

Yeah another thing to wait for the technology to come another step, but it will be pretty cool (kinda cool now tho Wink )

Read before you buy.

There are problems, which maybe corrected as I haven't followed up on the latest yet. but for the Northern hemisphere it looks OK.
Cool

Let me add..
Current vuzix goggles offer a physical resolution no greater than 640x480, for this price range.
The frame and optics are one and the same modular construction, where vuzix has added their 3D sensors.

The problem with the sensors (Goggles that I have) is that they operate on the earth's magnetic field principle, which works fine in USA where the designs are made, as the earth's magnetic field is stronger in these regions of the N-Hemisphere. A lot of other regions the magnetic fields are much weaker for proper operation.

I have suggested that they use G-force sensors, which in my opinion would universally be more reliable, and more accurate. Also I've contacted the suppliers of the modular optics, and they are 'ok' for a commercial 800x600 dual system, but it cost a lot more $$$. When I asked for the price of 1024x1024 optics, they went 'ballistic' about 'military bang bang' goodies, which is senseless cos if you pull the lense off a digital camera and relace it with a quartz lense you will have infra red optics Hammer
Besides.. a lot of stuff you can buy in Taiwan anyway.. Angel

My wordsworth...

Hey K_Freddie- from experience then- I dig it. Yeah the last thing I'd want to do is put down some mad coinage and be unhappy with such an indulgence as this. I already have a nice video card, TrackIR3 and a 19" LCD monitor that works OK, but like many here always looking for that extra kick of reality. Over time I got throttle, pedals, FFB joystick. This woulda been the capper tho.

Yeah like I said before tho looks like technology that'd be better to mature before jump'n in.

At least if it had a good review here or there that'd be encouraging.

Thanks again for the info-

Triad

RC airplanes, like hot air ballooning, is a fun hobby but sometimes the people doing it are irresponsible idiots. What these guys are doing is illegal on a couple of fronts here , in the netherlands.

1. R/C planes arent allowed above a certain height because they pose a danger to General aviation and commercial aviation. A bird strike can kill your engine, think about ingesting one of these things.

2. Flying in clouds, balloonists have a bad habbit of doing this too. Great way to get in trouble with IFR traffic. Balloons are not allowed near or in significant clouds. There have been near misses with IFR traffic and Mil traffic with balloons who were too close to or in cloud.

4 For R/C aircraft there is a weight and size restriction, beyond that you actually need a pilots license or an exemption.

4. Without permission from the ministry of defence it is illegal to make or transmit aerial photography (includes video too)in The Netherlands

All in all, fun hobby and pretty cool looking just stick to the rules. Sadly the majority dont even know there are rules (understandable for R/C pilots, there is no legally required training I believe so who is going to inform them?) to begin with and a few balloonist just dont appear to care. Dont know the rules about this in the countries the video's were made in but I come across the above mentioned situations a lot in the Netherlands.

Idiot No. 1

Irresponsible idiots like this guy;

1. Flying way too close to GA Traffic intentionally. The small R/C plane is hard to spot making a potential collision much more plausible.

2. It's a bad idea to fly formation with the GA planes if you do not have adequate training but this guy does it with out the pilot of the other plane knowing. What's even more idiotic is that the GA plane passes into his blind spot so he cant even keep eyes on the other aircraft.

It's dumb stunts like this that get people killed.
