Just found these benchmarks, looks like the single 4870 beats the single Nvidia 9800GTX!

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/ati-4800-series-review.ars/4

Does anyone else have other benchmarks so we can compare and get the true picture?

If these are correct then ATI is back with a vengeance...The ATI 4870 beats the Nvidia 9800GTX in everything except the useless 3dmark 2006. SO dont be foooled by benchmarks guys!

I currently have a Nvidia 7900GS, may have to look towards an ATI card next Smile I have no brand loyalty and simply buy the best card I can afford for the cash.

Xiolablu3, yep the HD 4xxx series are the real deal. I know anandtech (sp?) has a great review of them and also check out toms hardware forums I know they have a list of great reviews, sorry I don't have links at the moment. As it stands right now ATI's new cards are pimpslapping NV's all over the place, not only at price point but in many cases being cheaper. And for the record its the 4850 that's beating the 9800GTX, the 4870 beats the GTX260 and comes close in some benchies to the 280. They fixed the AA/AF problem and when turned on will pull away from their NV counterpart. I'm looking at replacing my 1950xtx for a 4850 in the fall when I graduate, hoping Oleg will optimize his new sim also for ATI as he has done in the past for NV.

Edit: yeah what Urufu_shinjiro said.

Hey mate, thanks for the heads up but I would NEVER buy any of the dual cards nor SLI, I think its a waste of money.

In every case I haave ever seen of SLI since it was first implemented by 3DFX all those years ago with the Voodoo2, I have seen the next card come out and beat two of the previousd cards. For instance in this situation with the Voodoo2, the Voodoo3 was far faster than 2 Voodoo2's in SLI.

Therefore the only application I can see that is good for SLI si if someone has lots of money to burn and wants the very fastest system they can get TODAY.

Anyone looking for bang for buck should not get SLI IMO.

I'll also explain why I htink its pretty useless at the moment. Think about it, if you own one 8800 GTS for example, which cost you £150 (just a number not accurate pricing). Now that 8800GTS can run any game we have today very well, there is no real need to go any faster right now.

Now its 6 months on and the 9800 GT comes out for say £200 and the 8800GTS has dropped to £100. Now this guy could get more performance by selling his 8800GTS for £100 and buying a new 9800GTX rather than spending another £100 on another 8800GTS for SLI AND the 9800GTX would be much faster/more stable/newer etc.

So you see, I cannot see a time when SLI is useful for the average user. Possibly its useful for the speed/benchmark/3d mark freaks with lots of money.

As far as I can see, the average gamer like you and me, are always better off getting the next generation card than buying another card in SLI.

For instance IMHO dont get another 8800GTS in SLI, save for a 9800GTX or equivelent instead.

I agree with what you're saying but that doesn't really apply to the 4870X2. The 4870X2 is two 4870 chips on a single card and is actually supposed to offer about 15-20% more performance that two 4870's in crossfire! So ignoring the fact that it's two chips it will be the fastest single graphics card, faster than the GTX280 and will cost about $499 IIRC. So in this case I think the 4870X2 has something to offer for those looking for a very fast single graphics card.

Indeed NORAD_Shinjiro.

I have a 3870 x2, and there isn't even a crossfire option in CCC. It works like a single GPU card, and gives you most of the advantages of crossfire without the crossfire incompatability issues. It can however, be paired with ANOTHER 3870 x2 in crossfire.

As for the 48xx's. It seems like they really start to show their advantages when the resolution and AA are cranked up. It seems like the harder you push them, the better they like it.

I as well have the 3870X2, I got at in February and at the time it was $450 bucks but my AGP 7800gs was all but exploding on me with compatablity issues and lock ups. The 3870X2 was getting just as good scores as the 700-800 dollar nvidia cards and was indeed the best bang for the buck in terms of high performance back at that time, so it was a no brainer for me. There is nothing wrong with a dual gpu setup if you plan on running high resolutins with alot of filtering where a single GPU will choke. But yes, if I had time to wait for the next ATI card with new technology on it, I wouldn't be hard pressed to go for that route either.

I tend to agree with Xiolablu3 on SLI.

However there are occasional situations where SLI will work out useful. For example two of you own early 8800 cards and one of you upgrades to a new 48xx ATI, the other guy can use the spare card to upgrade to dual 8800.

This could be an artifact of the current driver set, often the initial drivers for a new card are reasonably optimized for higher resolutions (the ones that get benchmarked in reviews) but the lower resolutions still need work.

You could crossfire the 4870x2 and have 4 GPUs Smile why you'd need that at the moment I have no idea. lol

I'm not so sure about that. Starting with the 9700, it seems like all of their cards have worked better at the higher Resolution and IQ.

nVidia's cards back then were always faster with no AA/AF, but once you turned AA and AF on, ATI would kick their butt.

I ordered my 4870 on tuesday. Winky The price-performance ratio is great. I won't have much time with my new card however. My girlfriend will kill me for buying a new one when my "old and crappy" x1900xtx is just fine.... Sad Eyes

AMD Radeon HD 4870 DDR5

ATI is back indeed and this is terrific news for us consumers no matter what brand you go with. Have you seen the prices these days? Much improved!

Going along with what Havok said about prices. I know ATI`s general strategy is to try and control the midrange cards. So are these cards considered midrange? and by that I`m also asking what are the price range for this series?
