Hi all,

I started a QMB today. I landed my 109E (due to some 'black stuff' on my windscreen) and was examining damage on the enemy. I noticed an SB-2 flying with a fuel leak.

But the mid-upper gunner was not in his turret although all other crew members were present. Had he bailed out I asked myself...??

But as I watched he slowly appeared in the turret from below Blink

And here he is back in his turret ready for duty!!

Why? Here is a possible explanation. The SB-2 as you can see in the pics has a gun in the belly below the mid-upper gunner.

When the aircraft was flying above my landed 109E the gunner changed positions to man the belly gun.

There are still some amazing details to find in this sim Thumbs Up

Maybe we should have a sticky regarding these gems?

Best Regards,
MB_Avro.

Yea, I remember seeing this while on campaign offline and checking out a Russian bomber under attack from 109. I was really impressed with how the rear gunner had to move about the rear and bottom turret gun as the 109 flew about his plane. When no enemy plane`s around he seems to go on a fag break deeper in the plane!

That`s the kind of attention to detail that makes IL2 stand out.

Check the B-24J. The belly turret is recessed inside the fuselage. When an enemy plane gets near, the turret lowers and is ready for action.

When all is clear, the turret goes back up into the fuselage.

The first time I saw that I was coming up from behind on a limping Kate (he couldn't maneuver for some reason) and I was flying up from below, corkscrew over the top, down, and then up from below again...and I saw the gunner poping up from below and back down as I changed elevation (I kept flying the same routine over and over again to watch him)...time it just right and he never gets a shot off at you.

There's a hatch in earlier model SB-2 which opens and gunner rises to man the machinegun when you approach it.

Another gem?

I've been flying offline on this sim since 2003. I really like turning & burning, deflection shooting & landing a badly damaged plane on a carrier.

Here's the gem. I set up one ace (Me in a MkVIII Spit) vs. four Bf109E7s on the Normandy map. I take off & the four 109s are barrelling in head on. I'm flying at zero feet as they approach. I get a shot in on the #1 and his engine quits. The #3 plane is directly behind him and he collides with my tail. My rudder & tail are gone. I still have my elevators, and #3 crashed in pieces.

I figure I have quite a fight ahead of me, but the #2 & #4 109s just fly their waypoints. I sneak in behind them and pick away making aeleron turns and I end up with four victories!

I managed a rough landing on the island strip.

The #4 plane formed up on the #2, and all he did was watch the #2. #2 just flew his waypoints.

Maybe the AI didn't load correctly, but it was my easiest 4 victories ever.

I've just had a 'first', 10 minutes ago.

HeIII, one of a group, climbing through 3000m passing over the front line. Flak starts up and I get smashed in the port wing.

Big holes, otherwise seems ok so carry on.

Back home, turn onto crosswind leg of the racetrack ready for final.
Get permission; put the gear down, and... Nothing. Not a sausage. Red lights. No gear. Oh dear.

I straighten up and attempt to lower the gear manually, and low and behold the gear cranks down and I get green lights. Couldn't believe it...

Fly another circuit and land.

Never seen that before. Smile

Interesting the way the damage model works sometimes.

That particular example is actually a touch non-historic as the he-111 is famous for dropping its gear once it took hydraulic damage. Pilots often reported the he-111 dropping its gear after quite minor damage.

Yes Ai can sometimes get into un-aware mode, it doesn't matter the Ai skill... but it isn't so often.
And they usually wake up after one of their comrades goes down Big Grin .

Also.. if they get into landing routine (following waypoints) they wont engage you! All they are doing is landing thru their waypoints, and you can pick them one by one Big Grin (ok they may try to evade here and there Smile ).

What I like about the manual gear emergency use when the main gears fail is that it actually takes a bit of initiative.

IL2 doesn`t tell you, you have to figure it out. I like it. You feel so good, after a long flight and battle that you had the brains to save the aircraft at the last minute.

So many games these days treat people like idiots and tell them every sngle little thing.

True. It hits the spot on many levels.

Incidentally, the mission I was on above was to bomb a train from 5000m.

I only made 3000m because when the flak started I stopped climbing and just accelerated.

There was no sign of the train, so rather than hang about I bombed the tracks.
On return to base the objective was reported as being achieved.

I delved into the ntrk and noticed that although there was no visible sign of damage to the tracks, when the train eventually arrived in the area it stopped; in the middle of nowhere, just short of where the bombs had straddled the tracks.

Was this the programmed stopping point of the train? Or was it responding to the invisible damage? Either way it was a very satisfying bog standard mission... Smile

Having the gear damaged happens to me quite often in the Bf110. Sometimes it's really problematic to lower the gear manually when one of your engine is dead and you have holes everywhere in the aircraft....
