Hi,

I know talk of Storm of war is prohibited, and im not going to ask "when's it comming"

But why is there no dedicated forum / Web site for it?
Its generally accepted that it will be here some time next year, there are photo's, snipits of information, interviews ect ect, why no forum?

Normally, when a game is comming, it gets its own web site, and has a build-up to encourage PR for it, along with the odd update or two, and of course fans wishes ect ect.

Most games have a site at least a year before there release for the said purposes...so while i can wait until it done, cant there be a dedicated site for it?

I was expecting an update in Sept but nothing...

11 months and counting until release!

Some in game screen shots would be nice

I, like you Clannsman, would love to have a SOW website with pics, videos etc. I go onto this and other IL-2 forums a few times each day ... hoping to get news of developments.
I also suspect that you're correct in saying that one would normally expect to have a website functioning about a year or so prior to the publication/release of a game.

However, I can't help feeling that some members of our community (a very small minority, I believe) have rather ruined it for the rest of us by "flaming" developers and really, just not showing the respect and appreciation that they deserve - it's not necessarily what is said, but how it is said, that matters!

Based on some of the past postings, that have been rude/insensitive, I wouldn't "bare my ***" for it to get whipped!!
I may be wrong, but that's how I would react!

I think that Mungee has hit the nail on the head here: there may be little benefit in having a SOW website that attracts the sort of negative comments that some people insist on posting. There may be more to it than that too:
quote:
Its generally accepted that it will be here some time next year

I think this in itself is another reason why there is no site - the endless speculation about when it will be released generates further criticism when a supposedly reliable 'release date' passes with nothing happening. I have seen nothing so far to support this 'sometime next year' timeframe, and if it was that far off, I doubt it would make any sense to be specific about a release date anyway. If and when it is nearly ready, no doubt we will hear something, but for now I'd rather hear nothing, rather than mere speculation dressed up as certainty.

As I understand it SOW is unlikely to be released by Ubisoft, so you won't hear about it here first anyway.

Actually IIRC it was an Oleg-post on the banana forum that pretty well indicated the *target* date.
>Always< Oleg had said that target dates were not firm, the product or patch would not be released until ready
and >always x 20+< there are posts saying we were promised that date. IMO there's a lot of kids who needed
to spend more time learning and less time playing around. But what is "funner"?

I can understand his post in a sense that there are some complicated rules that are valid for this place. Since he is not a regular here it can be understood...

And mods are a perfect example of that... first banned all together then not, so you can actually discuss mods but not post links or promote them (?). Even I is confused and I'm here a lot Googly .

Ah Big Grin .

SoW discussion is not prohibited at all. Also, Oleg stated that there would be many people playing SoW by October of 2010. Generally a website is up to the publisher to set up and we still don't know who the publisher will be for SoW. 1C tends to run slow on these sort of things, the website for Birds of Prey (the Xbox360 il2 port) wasn't up and running till a couple months before the release.

As far as forums go, the closest thing to an official SoW forum is the 1C "banana" forums as that is where SoW official updates have come from so far, I assume they will create an official SoW subforum there eventually.

I've just bought my wife a new laptop which is 'buy now pay in 12 months' so that she cannot complain when I order my new super PC in 12 months time to play SOW !! - that's what you call thinking ahead!

Also waiting to know when to book my holidays next year - to be off work when SOW is released!!

Any other preperations you can think of to make for when the game is released ?

Cheers,

Simon.

There will not be a website until there is a deal made with a distributor. Likewise, there will be no updates until a deal is made with a distributor.

A deal had been anticipated for September. As usual though, these things have fallen through, become delayed and met unforseen obstacles.

After being away from the forums for nearly a year, it's funny how similar the threads seem. Sort of like picking up a soap opera after not watching for a long time.

Oh man, did anyone else do a confused and slightly shocked double-take when they saw a "Storm of War" thread started by a "Clannsman"?

"Poor Neville Chamberlain believed he could trust Hitler. He was wrong. But I don't think I'm wrong about Stalin" - also Winston Churchill, later, in 1944

Heh,heh

I've actually been a memeber of this site from IL2's release, 100's of posts around the time, but after a long break came back in 2006 and had a problem login in...to cut a long story short, i opened a new account (hence the double nn in Clannsman) and re-started over again, complete with "Welcome to the Forum"...again!

Not been an active member of the site since 2006 really..got a little tired of the now prehistoric IL2, and have always felt (while being the best fighter sim out there) it falls short of a trully great sim due to lack of strategic depth.

Been bideing my time with my other two favs Silent hunter and Total War...

I was being a bit sarcastic with the "prohibited on this site", as someone else pointed out, when ever i take a look at this site, the same saga's seem to be in process, recent years were full of "When's Storm of war coming out", the the raptuous reply of "when its done" Thread close.

I do feel however it would surely benifit the Devs to have a dedicated Forum for peoples ideas and thoughts along with snipits of info and photos to wet out appertite.

Personally i remember playing and excellent fighter sim (for the time) on the amiga called Operation Overlord (i think)....this actually had more depth than IL2 and i would like to similar incorperated into SOW...

You played over the same map as SOW will cover (obviously, its the overlord campaign!) and had a few aircraft available..typhoon / Huricane / spit and a bomber (cant remember which),it played out much like IL2 except YOU decided on the attack / patrol for the day, i.e. you could send a mission to destroy one of the enemy's fields, and either play as the bomber or the escort..

Once the mission was done a de-breif was given in a proper mess hall, where the results of the mission were discussed, naturally if they were successful the enemy would not have use of this field for some time....if the enemey fighters were strong, you could order (and join) a air superiority patrol, or send a mission to take out the enemy's radar ect ect you get the idea, and obviously the enemy was doing the same to you.

Incidently, it had a few other neet ideas...if one of your squadrons was getting low on aircraft, you could fly a mission with a choice of aircraft to another air base and shift around your numbers...another interesting idea was, if you were taken out during a mission but you still had alied aircraft (on your mission)with you, you could jump into another of your escorting planes and continue the fight.

I realise the purists amongst us would shone such an idea as swapping a downed plane for another, but i guess it would counter-act the bad A.I having flown in a few of the fighters during a battle!!

Anyway, im looking forward to SOW, but do hope it has a bit more depth to the 'outside of cockpit' game as well as the flight sim bit, which im sure will be excellent.

See you in 2012!

Why is questions about SoW still asked here? There is a dedicated forum over at 1C. And to my knowledge there is nothing to even show that UBI will be publishing SoW.

Thats the whole point there is no dedicated SOW forum. Anyway I can't see a SOW website opening up until SOW is only a few months away. There has been plenty of discussions regarding SOW at the UBI, SimHQ, and IC forums over the last five years for Oleg to have a good idea on the wants of the community.

People have been demanding a website and more advertising for years, even calling the dev/pub less than smart for not doing so, but it would have been a huge waste of money. These things will happen when the time is right. Or not at all.... this is the first time in five years, that I have been apprehensive about SOW.

having a website is free if you got your own server...you need to pay for the domain a very little money Wink

Oleg & co are one of the best software developers currently but their marketing/sales department is.... I can find a polite expression
