I hear that pristine restored Mustangs are worth around three million dollars, and are obviously a rare commodity. That made me wonder, is there a modern production prop plane that compares with the P-51 in terms of power and maneuverability? What plane could the modern pilot buy that comes close?

The modern equivalent is the Mustang. There was a crash at Oshkosh (is it two years ago now?) In which two Mustangs tangled on landing. One was a new build (B model) Mustang. It was not a restoration.

It is still expensive.

Why exactly you watn to know this is beond me! Googly

This isn't even close, but its one of the better planes.

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way home, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

Doesn't Oleg have one of these?

OK not as fast, as long ranged & heavily armed as a Mustang,
but turns faster than anything Wink
& tops at vert.

And rolls. 400 degrees per second. Googly

Dunno about a Mustang equivalent but the Lancair IV does 345mph and climbs at 2000ft/min, comparable to some of the early war aircraft.

It was a new build P-51A.

Gerard S. Beck of Wahpeton, ND was flying the green-winged P-51A that apparently collided with a P-51D, flown by Casey Odegaard, as both aircraft came in to land at 1517 CDT

Salute

A company used to make a replica Mustang, called the "Thunder Mustang", cost around $285,000 in kit form a number of years ago. It had better performance than the original at low alts. But was made largely of carbon fiber and with a different engine of 600 cubic inches instead of the standard Merlin of 1650 cubic inches.

Out of production now, although there is still a webpage up:

http://www.thundermustang.com/

You can also get a much cheaper kit Mustang, 75% of original size, all aluminum build, called the T-51, for around $75,000. It has fast cruise speed of around 170 mph and a VNE of 197 mph with a converted Suzuki 2.7 liter V6 automotive engine in it.

Here is a link to a brochure:

http://www.titanaircraft.com/f...ochure_e_on-line.pdf

But in my opinion, the best WWII replica aircraft is the 'Supermarine Spitfire Mk26', built in Australia, which a 90% scale, all aluminum replica, which has the option of a converted LS2 V8 engine of 430 hp. It has a fast cruise of 276 mph, and climb of around 3500 fpm, which is roughly equivalent to a Spit Ib. Cost is around $150,000 in kit form.

Here are some videos of the V8 powered version:

There are plenty of SE aircraft faster than the Mooney.

For example, this one uses the same engine and is fixed gear, more range, and better useful load too. It is enough to make a Mooney owner cry:

I saw what I think may have been an authentic Mustang (Im sure it was 1:1 scale) at airventure 2009 for 1.9 mil.

If you want to watch a bunch of millionaire and billionaires playing with their toys and wwii planes, go to Airventure 2010. I Even got to see one of five Flying P38's (also saw the walrus guy from Orange County Chopper looking at it with a full camera crew) and a One in Seven Hellcat.

That's just a little boy toy. The Mooney is much more practical day in and out obviously. Razz Wink2
