How does one accomplish this? I break my landing gear every time.

Mix this with a lot of practice and a dollop of good humour.
Shura did that one - nice and safe technique. Personaly I prefer to rounding out off of a chopped throttle to try for a 3 point - but the chaika is quite unstable approaching the point of stall and I get the odd bounce. |

But inspired by Breeze147's question, I have another one: how to land savely a J8A with ski's. I tried it many times but I always bump up and down in the snow or on a froozen lake untill I crash. Any suggestion? |

Interesting - I'd forgotten that the J8 converts automaticaly to skis on snow map. I suspect the flight model coding is unaltered. try landing it on a runway first - if not on runway I suspect you get same bumpy ride and tip over as on rough grass. I might test tonight |

This is what happens everytime I try to land on skis... |

I have never been able to successfully take off in an I-153!

Wow, I never knew that the I-153 was this tough to fly, it's one of my fav planes! On takeoff you need a lot of rudder control, and right from the start or she'll freak out on you. I've never had a problem landing, just come in slow and set her down gentle and all is well. I hope you guys figure it out, the I-153 is one of the most fun planes in the game.
P.S. Take her up with rockets with a 1-1.5 sec. delay and try to shoot down some fighters with rockets, much fun! Remember, if you don't shoot them down with the rockets you at least scared a load into their pants, lol! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flying online as NORAD_Shinjiro |

actually, on a similar note, what are the distances that rockets will reach at 1, 1.5, 2 seconds etc? I'm trying to get around to using rockets for AA work, but I don't know how far I should be when I fire them.

When I try slow, I lose control of the nose as I approach stall. I think Gregor the plane captain wants to hit me in the nose with a huge wrench. |

I'm not very good at traditional landings so maybe that helps me with the I-153, I tend to come in slow but above stall speed and fly almost level to the runway and just let it drift down till the wheels are down, then once you know you haven't bounced too hard chop the power, this thing doesn't take too long to slow down so no need to do a huge flare and try to three point it.

Cool video! Thanks to you and Urufu both! |

Wow, I hadn't seen that video till just now but thats almost exactly how I do it! Works great in the I-153, too bad I try to land everything that way, lol.

This thread strokes my ego ( which it hardly needs ) because I can land and take off in all these planes and have done so many times. Including the J8A on skis. As always I can furnish tracks if nobody believes me.

The only plane in this sim I've had trouble landing is the Ju-88. I seem to pancake the bugger every bloody time
The Chaika can be a tricky plane to land but I've still found that you can three-point her successfully, provided that your airspeed is low enough (170-180KMPH IAS if memory serves, if not less) and your stick settings aren't overtly sensitive. Takes some practice, but is doable nevertheless... ------------------------------------------------ SH4 + RFB 1.5 + SH3 + GWX 2.1 |

Just get FFB stick and you will be fine. It is so much easier to do with force feedback. Only hard things I have been having is when landing planes has been judging the speed of the plane when coming in to landing on a carrier.

Take off in I153 is a breeze, landing is more demanding, but lately my real problem with Tchaika is to be able shoot down something, them times where eager young virtuals Hartmanns whet in merry go round in his/her Me109 are long gone...

The good news: I didn't break the landing gear.
The bad news: I still flipped over because I drifted off the runway after touching down. I don't like the look in Gregor's eyes. |

OK you can land a J8 on a frozen river. It's just a bit bumpy.
Here is a 408m ntrack of my first attempt http://www.69giap.com/GIAPWEB/img/temp/stest1.ntrk OK - a bit untidy but they all look like that after a few beers. And just for the trivia seekers - why does the J8 get skis on the Finland map but not on Kurland winter or Murmansk? |

Thanks for sharing your track. It was a little bit bumpy indeed but you know how to land without crashing like I do. Mmm...maybe I should drink a few beers as well before trying to land. Nice skin by the way. |
