While installing, at about 25% complete, I get the following message:

"crc error: the file drogram fires\ubisoft\tom clancy's rainbow six vegas 2\kellergame\content\sounds\ew.sso doesn't match the file in the setup's .cab file. the medium from which you are running the setup may be corrupted; contact your software vendor."

Abort, Retry, Ignore. After repeated retry attempts, i gave up and hit ignore.

Game seemed to install correctly, downloaded and installed patch fine. Game played fine, but upon death and reloading of checkpoints, game freezes with a popup box error that i can't read due to the R6V2 screen blacking out.

I got this disc at fry's in sacramento, CA. Swapped it with a brand new game from fry's, same error.

Friend tried installing with the same error.

Yes, I got the same error, but at a different loading point. "murdertown". I exchanged it, but at the same store (perhaps same batch?) and same error. I ignored it this time, but game freezes on loading screen.
I meet all the minimum specs.

should i just assume the problem lay in the fact its a crappy Xbox port?

I may have a solution for you. I have a LG dvd /rw that has been playing up a bit and I was gettting the same errors intermittently. I swapped it out for an old RICOH I had lying around and it did not have the problem. Because of this I am more inclined to think it was the drive not the disk with the problem. My machine is AMD 3700+ with 1gb ram and ATI radeon 3850 512mb card. Worked for me anyway. Suggest trying to run a cleaner through the dvd player before spending anymore on a dvd player first though

Mine installed fine using a SATA DVD, but it wouldn't read the disk to start the game.

Used an IDE DVD drive and it works fine.
These are all new drives!

I have just spent the last week looking into this. I uninstalled again but then got the same intermittent errors. I then started to get file corruptions on all my dvds that I tried to install. I then wiped xp and started again but the xp disk then started to fail on different files. There was no consistancy so I ruled out bad sectors on the hard drives. I then took out one my memory sticks and now everything works fine no errors on any Cd/DVD or trouble installing. No corruptions from downloaded files. The problem is definitly with the memory stick.
