Just purchased Rainbow Six Vegas (1) through Steam (PC). Appears to be up to date. I turn on the game, set at 1600x1200, all options are on to highest level. Game is running at 150 fps in menus, 70-90 fps in game. Soon as I start the actual game, about 5-10seconds into the game the screen goes black, comes out of the black screen into the game, and I then get average of 10-15 fps, no matter what I'm doing, in game or just in menus. My system should be far more than capable to run this game. System runs DirectX 11, my video driver is up to date, v190.62. Below is the dxdiag. Hope you guys can figure something out. Hey biggaudi.

Your system is more than adequate to run this game.
All I can do is make a couple of suggetions for you to try.

Make sure you don't have any anti virus programs that are scanning while you play.

Close down all programs that may be running in the background.
Use the system configuration utility .. startup tab.. and uncheck everything except maybe anti virus.
You can run anything manually when you want.

Try updating Direct X but don't use the web based installer.

Download the newest (August 2009) redistributable from Microsoft's website.

Download to a folder you can easily find.
Extract to the same folder, or another folder you can find easily.

Locate and run this file: DXSETUP.exe
(There will be around 140 files)

This will only update as needed.

Did as you said, no other programs running in the background, no antivirus to bug the game. I installed the direct x update and that seemed to work well. I thought success for about 30minutes, then it bugged up again, same issue with the black screen and when i comes back major fps drop. I've been tweaking the settings in nvidia control panel for the game, trying to see if anything will work out. I keep bumping down the AA and the aniosotropic to see what may be more compatible and stable. We'll see what happens.

I've also noticed a significant amount of lag in multiplayer mode, and not internet related so much as purely game performance wise. Not sure if this is tied to the problem from before, or if people on multiplayer have problems just because.

Vegas 2 has horrible netcode!
You will get bad lag with a good system and fast broadband!

Ubisoft isn't going to fix anything.
What you see is what you get!

Just had a thought.
Since Win 7 is new, maybe drivers aren't as optimized as for older OS.

There is a beta 191.03 that might be worth a try.
These are over a month newer than the latest release.

(Sorry .. it looks like this link didn't go directly to the beta, so just enter your card, do a search, and it should come up with the beta driver)

You sound fairly knowledgable, but make sure you do a complete uninstall of your old drivers before installing new ones.

I like to uninstall from Device Manager.
Then delete the Nvidia folder on your C: drive.

When you reboot, cancel any windows that come up so no drivers are installed.

Then run the new drivers.

I think i got it to work. I tuned down the aniosotropic to 4x and the AA to 2X. I haven't had any problems yet. We'll see. I'm also downloading the beta video drivers, maybe that will help a bit. Thanks for the tip, didn't realize there were beta drivers, hope there aren't too many kinks that need ironing with the beta.

Nvidia's beta drivers are usually pretty stable.
I use them quite often on some of my systems.
