Perhaps Ninjaboy or someone else familiar with modding Vegas/Vegas 2 will know the answer to this:

Is it possible to make a server side mod that would force all people to a team color and remove the coin over people's heads?

It would be nice to avoid the number of TKs with the current system of everyone wearing random uniforms and instead have a "blue" team and a "red" team or something like that.

I would think that since each game transmits it's uniform colors and armor choice to the server and then the server sends it out to all the players that there would be a way to intercept that on the server and change it before sending back out to all players. I have a feeling that there is nothing that could be done about the color that you see on your own character. This means you would see yourself as you configured it (if you go into a 3rd person view)and you would see everyone else with the assigned team colors.

Highly doubt it.

This game was centered around the idea that you could look however you wanted to, and truly "express yourself" online.

Ubisoft actually thought that would sell more copies. LOL

That type of thinking wouldn't be bad for customizing from the neck up or a custom arm patch. It wouldn't be bad for free-for-all matches either.

It was the worst possible idea imaginable (after 3rd person view, respawn, and health regen) for a 2 team multiplayer game. It just looks lame and causes TKs and makes it so you have to have a big coin over your head.

for a future game i dont think they should necessarily trash the custom options.

it can be worked like this:

clan function - the game should support clans. and whoever is "clan leader" (i.e. the person who created the clan in the menu of the game) has the tools to make custom camo colors, or choose from a list of preset camos. although leave the colors to ones that exist in real military camouflage.

that way, anytime you play as a clan, all members registered in your group will automatically match up to the custom camo settings designated by the clan leader.

2. public rooms - in public random team games, it should preset the team uniform color for each team. maybe auto-randomize it from a set list of preset camo. otherwise a host setting can determine for each team which color camo.

3. individual customization. if there is another PEC or whatever, just let people pick the TYPE of clothing, armor, gear etc. not the color. you can still have face scanning if you want. basically all the customization of Vegas series should be there, just no color picking.

Noble effort...

But No, this ridiculous idea doesn't belong anywhere near a Rainbow Six game. In any way, shape, or form.

i know what you're saying but it doesnt have to be ridiculous.

my biggest gripe with RSV custom options are that almost none of them are real-world pieces.

as long as the options are kept to things which make sense, i dont see it as ridiculous at all.

less Starship Troopers, more real-world Tactical Gear, then you see the customization is actually useful.

get rid of all that garbage armor they have in there and add in Interceptor (the entire modular system available, shoulders, groin pad, etc), CIRAS vests, LBVs, etc... you know, stuff that soldiers ACTUALLy wear in combat.

i also hate the fact that elbow/knee pads and leg/arm covers are considered "armor" since none of them are designed to stop bullets. those arm/shin protectors should all be categorized as "riot gear" and should be available in clothing, since it would have the same effectiveness against bullets as a Riot helmet would. these types of armor are intended to protect against low-impact blunt trauma (such as a blunt striking/melee weapon) or impact from debris, etc. NOT bullets. since there is no melee or shrapnel/collateral damage (chips of concrete/brick) from explosions in the game i see the riot gear as useless and unnecessary protection.

also since GRAW was able to license the CRYE combat chassis, it would be nice to see R6 license some real gear from TAG, Blackhawk, Oakley (looks like they have the SI boots in the game already), and other stuff that is actually out in use in combat today.

It is possible to give everyone the same uniform color.

That's how we got the our dedicated server hotfix to for the custom camo crash to work.

Since the custom camos were crashing the server we forced every user connecting who was using custom camo to be viewed by other players as default "black" uniforms.
However to the person using custom camo it still looked like their custom camo.

Everything you listed however can probably be done.

Alternatively, a client-side mod where you simply see all your teammates wearing the same colour as you? Surely that would be easier?

No.

The Server side mod would require about the same amount of time (maybe even less) to code and be serverside so everyone wouldn't have to download a special client.

I am not sure about the token image above player's heads.
Depending on how they coded that it might be tricky to remove.

This would be an easy mod to make.

I always think of everyone as mercenaries. It doesn't really cover up the different camo plothole, and I see where you're coming from, but I have to say I love customizing my character, and I doubt it's a trend we'll see leaving anytime soon. Even simple shooters like COD4 have customization with gun camouflage. Metal Gear Solid 4 has customization. The MMOFPS era is upon us, and the feeling of unlocking a new piece of equipment is one that people love and don't want to let go of.

I am sure an ubi programmer could do both the matching uniforms and eliminating the coin over people's heads in an hour. I doubt it will happen but I never thought they would give in and give us high stakes either...even though high stakes was broken and they won't fix it.

You sure? Maybe someone working at Rockstar Games, maybe, but Ubisoft?

  • Even for a flop on pc i got to admit that the vision of the artist(s) for Vegas is beyond speech. What i am seeing in game now is by far the best i have seen in any other game for realism. (coding) was the problem.
