I was waiting for this game before it was released, but when it came out it seemed like there were a lot of problems at the time so I decided to wait for a bit and now here it is-- 2008-- and I just remembered that I never got around to revisiting this game.

So now it's all patched up, is the game worthwhile? I'm familiar with the previous Heroes games, so you don't need to explain the basic concept of the game, just how it's different (for better or worse) than it's predecessors.

I prefer to get the opinion from other fans of the game rather than from professional reviewers because they don't have time to explore the nuances of the game. Feel free to be as detailed as you like with your review. I'm going to bookmark this post and revisit in a couple days.

what mode are you going to play ?
If your talking about multiplayer yeah its all fixed , And campaign is more stable ..

Only thing i hear of still problems with is when playing a human-computer game , Altough since i never play in this mode i'm not sure how serius those problems are.

I'd say most definitely for campaign and multiplayer but you may be disappointed in single scenarios as nevermind said. The AI cheats badly and rushes you week 3 and if it does not take the game it mostly stalls waiting for you to eventually take it down.

The game is pretty balanced at the moment apart from a few things and there are only a few minor bugs remaining.

One thing to keep in mind is that campaigns do not work as with H3. With SoD you could play the campaigns from all 3 if you had them installed, however that is not the case anymore. And that's annoying since the skill prerequisites in HoF and original and different from tribes.

One thing to keep in mind is that tribes has no patches to install, has all factions as well as the new additions that the others do not, even has the old maps. I'd only consider getting the others for the campaigns but frankly the original campaign is rather lame and 1/3 of HoF boring(till you get the good part). You can read about the storyline online for that.

Could you explain why the AI cheating is a problem for single scenarios, but is not a problem for the campaign?

edit: btw, I think I would mostly play Single Player, as that is how I've mostly played Heroes in the past

For one campaigns have certain objectives, it's not always about dealing with an AI rush. There is exploration, completing the occasional quest, sometimes the AI is blocked from reaching you for a good period of time so you can build up forces, in next missions you already have a good level so you can expand faster etc.

Normally I would not mind about cheating but it attacks you with superior forces all upgraded where you could barely build tier 7 and certainly could not buy everything. Also sees the map and gets a good discount in buildings. And once you gain some experience it still has no chance Big Grin It's beatable once you get to know it just like H3, the thing is that in H3 it you the illusion that it was a human player, this one doesn't.

I found H5 campaign missions to be overly scripted, at least compared to H3. With the exception of that Markal campaign in which you have to curse several Academy towns, it seemed like you were given very few options to play a given mission differently from the script.

I'm very disappointed to hear about the AI Frown

Well thanks for the comments everyone! I guess I'll give this game a pass and wait on H6. Hopefully it will be a return to form.

Multiplayer is definetly not fixed when it involves any number of computer players. Its highly unstable.

The single player campaign is good and have very few flaws. (mostly user errors more than anything)
