Sega announced some weeks ago, that they're making a Sonic in 2D. Mega Man 9 in 2D was a success, and generallly 2D seems to be making a comeback, even though mostly in platforming games.
So the question is: Should Heroes of Might and Magic go back to 2D? Why, or why not?

Question:
So, should HoMM V be in 2D?

Choices:
Why, yes of course!
Hell no!
Meh...

2D eternal! Shady

2D just feels better for a game like HoMM. It is easier to navigate the screen, has more of a fantasy feel and still fits better to the classical image of feudal knights, is more relaxing to look at the screen, can make for a much more beautiful world, it's easier to create maps, should be easier to create a 2D game...

I kinda comapare this to movies. Just because we have the technology to make movies in color doesn't mean we have to. B&W and 2D can work just as well or better

I wonder why those voting for 3D don't state their view...

But there aren't any votes for 3D yet, just a couple of votes for "Meh" and if they're "Meh" votes, by implication that means they don't care, so why bother stating an opinion....... Shady

Or they are Faroese followers of the cult of Baa!

Why else should they chose to speak like sheep?

I would be happy with 2D and concentration on game balance and other features but I don't see HOMM ever returning to it. Snazzy graphics appeals to more players.

Sadly, this is true. But a game like HoMM really doesn't need great graphics.

I don't like the pollarizing poll questions, there is no neutral ground (I don't care is not neutral).

Regardless, I'd like to see it in 2D. I always played HoMMV in the classic view so I could see everything, and even then I'd miss stuff occasionally, as it was placed behind a very tall tree, or a sylvanna ancient blends in with the rest of the trees. The 3D makes it too easy to accidently hide things, and while I agree that it's okay to hide things occasionally (I know I've seen hidden treasure behind castles in II and III), HoMMV just hid way too much.

That's just a minor concern, though. Heroes feels more right in 2D in general, like most people said, but I figured we needed another opinion.

However, I'd LOVE to keep the battles 3D (just no more square grid, please. Hexes work so much nicer!). It makes the battles feel more epic, and simply having battles 3D wouldn't affect the time it takes waiting for the computer when you hit end, which I know is a major concern in HoMMV. The sieges in HoMMV were probably the most epic feeling battles I've ever encountered in Heroes (as a general rule.), and I'd hate to lose that feeling.

Hmm... polarizing questions. Well, I like to get a conclusive answer from a poll, and for that you need polarizing questions, I guess.

Oops, made a mistake.

Meant polarizing -answers-.

You only have HECK YES and HECK NO, while I'm definitely in between. Closer to yes, but not 100%

This is why Justice's poll answers were so good.

Yeah, but if you want statistical evidence, polarizing answers's the way to go.
One could always elaborate in a post

Depends largely on what kind of statistics you want and in academic environments balanced and neutral expressions are the norm (too few and too biased replies and you fail/get kicked out of work).- Which is why I usually make such polls, damaged beyond all repair from hanging around universities and parliament since I was born Indifferent

Of course, more expressive polls can create more discussion every now and then, but usually also result in more heated debate. At least when there are enough participants for a discussion.

So it really depends on what kind of discussion you want, what the audience is and what result you want.

I'd love to see the next Heroes adopt a 'Total War' style empire map. Whilst HOMMV's 3D world worked extremely well in bringing the HOMM universe to life, it became disorientating when you spun the map, and the loss of 'strategic awareness' that you got from the 2D maps was too big a price to pay. If TW can successfully marry a 2D campaign map with 3D combat, HOMMVI has got to take a leaf out of its book!
