I'd go with heroes 2 (the one where the vamps say blah). 1 is too simple, 3 too bland and large, and 4 not to my taste. I play 5 the most, but 2 has a nice combination of art and fun and simplicity.
help! the forum ate my post.

Heroes 2 and 3. I would like to ask what is your favorite single player made map for Heroes 5 series? Also, if you can remember, what was your favorite single player made map for H2 and H3? What were your favorite multiplayer maps?
Kzar - Former Heroes of Might and Magic 2 Map Maker: Kzar&Nekros, Kzar's Revenge, World Order, Barbarian Lands, and one used in a tourney "Mid Domain". 1997 - 1998.

HoMM II all the way. It's music, it's story, it's atmosphere, it' s gameplay... It was just superb And it had lots of good maps.- Especially with the Price of Loalty. The "Last Hop" or what they were called campaigns (T_H_U_N_K being map no. 2 in the series), Betrayal, Balck Forest, Gates of Hell, Wizard lands, Enroth, Barbarian Lands (if I remember correctly) et ceter et cetera.
Freedom - a mountain in the distant sky, love in the grass, birds on the vast plains of the sea... Freedom - I treasure your name, I love your sweet sound, I smell your dreams.
I see you - when I turn away I hold you -when my hands are full
Freedom - Never shall you be more than a name to me

HoMM II by far. It always makes me buzz with nostalgia. Good old days... Faith is the most powerful thing in the world, because it can change the world. For better or worse - SH

heroes II will always be remembered... heroes III was the best one so far... heroes V is better than IV but its minimum system requirement makes it incompatible with many computers and this reduces the game taste.

Once you factor in the year that the games were made I'd have to vote for H2 all the way.
As another poster already pointed out my favorite maps & campaigns come from H1-H3 ...
-- The Claw from H1 for mindless fun -- The Evil campaign for original H2 -- The H3 original main campaign [to a lesser degree]
**************************
BTW: H2 got the vampire sound effect right. The "Blah" is classic!!!
The CD Audio tracks of H2 [IMHO] are still unmatched by any other HoMM's music!!! That music set such a great atmosphere I can't do it justice by explaining it.

Among other things, IMO HoMM III has the best music themes so far (although HoMM IV is VERY close). The main theme (the one, which goes with the main menu) is astonishing, the town themes are great (save maybe Castle's), the terrain themes too, and the battle music is just inspiring. HoMM II music is nice, ralaxing (so to speak) and very ear-friendly, but hardly such a masterpiece. I'd prefer it over HoMM V's though.

Heroes IV. The other heroes were boring. Heroes on battlefield rules. Heroes V is the worst of all

H3 by a landslide, but I do appreciate some of the improvements of H5 (initiative bar, creative skill combos, magic system).

@Greg1038 you have got to be kidding me what is so nice about the initiative bar, that you don't know when your troops move? and the fact that in 2 battles with the same troops they might move first even though you have 12 initiative and them 11? If I choose where the hero moves next why should the computer choose for me which troops move first even though they are of different initiatives?

unreal_az, to be clear I like the initiative bar just because it tells me who moves next. I'm not talking about the initiative system generally, which I agree should just follow each troop's initiative score.
