Heh, this is starting to piss me off... I've been following 'tech trees' on several different sites to get the ultimate perks like Urgash's Call or Nature's Luck... I've even been giving myself loads of experience with the console to speed the testing up. Anyway, I always end up having to choose an ability that will ruin my chances of getting the ultimate one. For example, when I'm going for Nature's Luck and want flaming arrows, it keeps spamming me with offers of Power of Speed (yes, I had deadeye shot, rain of arrows and nature's wrath, surely there are no other prerequisites for flaming arrows?). Same thing goes for Urgash's call; I want Dark Renewal but it spams me with Shrug Darkness instead... (yes, I had weakening strike (I think that's its name) and Master of Mind). What am I doing wrong? Surely it can't be that hard to get the ultimate abilities when following the tech trees properly? Oh, and yes, I've been using heroes who according to said tech trees can acquire the ultimate perks, like Talanar for Sylvan and Grok for Inferno.
This seems to be true in my experience... I have so far been unable to get the ultimate for the Stronghold, even on huge maps. What good are these skills if you have to play an impossible size map just to have a chance of getting it at the very end during mop-up phase?
I've been trying myself for eons, only a few times have i managed. but only when using wizardz, and lets face it that perk sucks.
I usally use one hero and do everthing with him/her and picking Enlightenment and Mentoring and then speedleveling other heroes. if your lucky, you may get the ulitiamte perk at lvl 20-22. but in 9 out of 10 times you get forced to pick a perk that eliminates the chance of gettin the ultimate one.
Frankly, I've never tried to get the ultimate skill because it doesn't seem worth the effort. Do I merrily take skills that seem interesting and fun, or laboriously follow some skill wheel? I know Heroes is all about planning, but in this case I'd enjoy the ride more thinking about a particular destination less.
And like SirJohn observes, you don't get it until the mop-up phase on a massive map. By then you have either won the scenario (sometimes because the dumb AI turtled in its castle most of the time) or lost it (sometimes because the cheating AI rushed you with an impossibly powerful army early on).

Yes, for instance with stronghold I just hate being forced to take catapult, goblin support, and brimstone rain when I could have ballista and first aid tent. Some of the prerequisites don't really have much to do with your skill, it seems more like Nival just decided to throw in some sucky skills so you had to use them. I would like to see a mod that just gave the ultimate skill at a certain level (assuming you have developed your primary skill).
After playing for months, I finally got the ultimate rage! The only map I was able to do this on was "battle in Vasteland" (and I'm not nearly through with it yet!). I still can't say if it's worth it tho. Funny thing but even having all the prerequisites you still have a good chance to not be offered your ultimate on level-up if you have empty slots elsewhere. I would say that without a memory mentor it is near impossible to achieve. Even with the MM I found I had to revisit it multiple times until I was offered appropriate choices.
