I have found a fix to this problem if you have vista.
Follow these instructions, they got my game working when I had the same problem. If in your games folder there is no Far Cry 2 icon, or you have steam version, then navigate to my games in steam and create a desktop shortcut. With either version (steam or non-steam) of Far Cry 2 drag your icon into games once you have that opened. Follow the instructions and enjoy, works perfectly fine now.
1. Browse to the Windows Games folder (Start button -> Games).
2. Right-click the Far Cry 2 shortcut and select 'Customize.'
3. Highlight the line 'Play' and click edit.
4. When in properties, click on the Compatibility tab and check "Disable visual themes."
5. Click apply and close.
6. Try running the game again.

I still think these splash n crash probs are all tied to screen resolution. I have tried several and many just wont work on my system. I dont have to run mine as admin, i dont have to run in safe mode, but I do have to use certain reolutions. I cant use 1165x774 or other 'off the wall' resolutions or it will crash as descibed here. This includes BOTH desktop and in-game resolution. I have to use 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x720, or 1920x1080. Occasionally 640x480 works but its quite ugly and it doesnt work every time. They can differ, as in both desktop res and in game res can differ but its all about finding a combination that works together. Yes, it sounds stupid but I have spent hours experimenting with it. (i should have documented better but i dont think resolutions that work for me will work for all PCs, as all Pcs differ a bit. I dont have that problem at all on the big rig.

Find the game in your hard drive, in steam I would assusme, and find the farcry2 file designated as an application (should have a tiny FC2 icon next to it, but maybe a steam one for you) Right click on it and choose 'send to desktop' or create shortct. It will say it cant create one there and ask you if youd like it on the desktop instead, which is what you want anyway. That bypasses the .exe file and loads the application directly.
