There are two common reasons for this. Most common is you were not properly disconnected from the previous server that you were connected to and that server still has your CD Key held. This can happen when either the server crashes "The server is not responding. Please click here to disconnect", you lag out of the server, or if you don't have the right version of a custom map that the server does. The fix for this is to:
1) Sometimes clicking the "Logout Ubi.com" and restarting Far Cry works. Not often, but sometimes.
2) More commonly, simply wait about 3-10 minutes for your CD Key to be cleared from the server and you'll be ok.
Since it's your CD key that is in use there are some drastic things you can do for possible immediate reconnects:
1) Go to a DOS prompt and type ipconfig /release. This will disconnect you from the internet and possibly free up your key. Reconnect to the internet by typing ipconfig /renew.
2) If you don't feel comfortable doing that, again "Logout Ubi.com" and reboot your PC. That will also be disconnecting you from the internet as above.
The second, and far less common, reason for your CD Key to be in use is that you bought the game on Ebay and the person you purchased it from is still using it. Also, there are some websites that give out illegal cd keys and you may be trying to use one already in use. Go buy the game and get your own valid key.
I bought a new game in the store. I can't play online because my cd key is already in use ?? Is someone else using my key ?? Can you check that for me ??
Same thing happened to me! I bought the game legally. I used to be able to play it fine, but now Cd Key is invalid. That is why I hate the whole CD Key, etc. It ends up hurting the legal owners of the game.
edit: this copy is a legal copy if you want proof i can take pictures of the whole package. same with me. i bought the game a long while ago but tryed for the first time to play on the internet and after updateing to the newest version what ever server i connect to says my key is already in use.
What gives with this cd key ****!! I bought the game legally, registered the game, and played through single player. The first time I tried to play online, I'm told that my cd key was already in use! How am I going to play online now? Any answers out there besides buying another game (which I am NOT going to do) and going through the same thing again?
I was playing the game lastnight and today it is telling me i have a invalid key. just wondering if their is a way to reenter it in to the game. Now it is saying that my CD-KEY is in use is their any way to track that. I didn't pay for the game buy it self I can't remember if I got it with my video card or my sound card. I just wonder if it is these copys of the game that have other keys out for it.

I had the same problem last night. I tried to attach to a server that I did not have the map for, it kicked me out, and when I tried to join another server, the game said I had a key that was already in use, and asked me to enter another. Tonight, I can see no internet servers

Thats exactly what just happened to me trying ot play online for the first time. This sucks. I didn't buy the game, it came free packaged with a new videocard.. so technically I did buy it. But its not working!
Can anyone help i have bought 2 copies of the game and both say my cd-key is in use and i dont no why i thought the first one was because my son registered the game in his name 2 because i was not playing it at the time and i went and bought the second one so now £60 lighter i am and still can not play game help me if u can please and i have tryed to get intouch with ubisoft for help but can not find the link to e-mail can any help me please ty
wow i c lots of people haveing the same problem like me i bought the game brand new from besbuy today and it tells me that my cdkey is in use. do i have to go out and spend another 29.99 for a new cdkey>? No!
I have the same problem, but i think ive figured it out for me at least, if i try to connect to a server and i get something like "error loading level data" or if it says connection timeout or whatever, then when i try to connect to another one it says "cd key in use" So i think what is happening is that ubisoft thinks i am logged in that first one, and i just need to wait like 5-10 minutes and try logging on again and it works. Pretty sure its simply a slow response problem, not the fact that your key is really used by anyone else.
Mine does it every time I am booted. I just got off the phone with UBI support in North Carolina and this is what I was told:
It is a server side issue with UBI. They need to change the netcode to reset the key in the authentication server when you disconnect or are booted. He also said that they are having issues with people who have COMCAST cable internet.
Hope this helps. BTW, he said re-booting the computer and waiting about 15-30 minutes is the best way to make sure the KEY is dropped from the active server
