I can't get Far Cry to play patched anymore, it always hangs at the Val/Jack splash screen whether patched to version 1.3, 1.31, 1.32, 1.33 or 1.4. The splash screen it freezes on verifies the patch is installed, it just won't continue any further. I can however launch and play the game unpatched, in fact I just finished playing through it all the way last night at v1.00.
I didn't have the Cooler, forklift or repeating rifle sound bugs, but I did have a few occasions where checkpoints would not save and in Dam I got a lot of graphics glitches with the trees the first run through. I replayed Dam and the 2nd time had no save or graphics problems. I want to patch the game though because besides the hit and miss save and graphics problems I want to play some of the custom maps and mods I've not tried yet, and most are made for patched versions of the game. I've always been able to play fine at version 1.33 before. Perhaps this is due to ATI having abandoned driver support for the X1950Pro I'm using. The latest driver you can get for the X1000 series is Cat 9.3, which I have. I can't update my GPU, audio or DirectX any further than it is. Anyone else having this problem or know a solution? |

have you tried using the newer graphics divers anyway? new drivers worked for my old 9800pro long after official support was dropped.

Sounds like a driver problem. Maybe a rollback to a version that came out right after the x1950 was released. Newer drivers might be optimized for newer games and moved away from older titles like Far Cry.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I forgot I made this thread and wound up shelving Far Cry after formatting and trying W7 RC in dual boot with XP.
Rolling back the driver was supposedly a work around for The Chronicles of Rid****: Assault on Dark Athena for this very same problem, but unfortunately it didn't work for me on that game. I've yet to try rolling back with Far Cry, but in Dark Athena they say Cat 8.8 is the one you have to go back to, why 8.8 I don't know. It never occurred to me to try the latest ones, though given some of the things ATI does I'm not sure I'd want to risk it. I really wish Angel Trinidad still made the Omega drivers. I can't blame this on Ubi or CryTek, ATI is just horrible when it comes to driver support. I may end up just getting by playing other older games I have like RTCW, Max Payne, etc, until I build my new gaming rig at the end of the year, which definitely won't have anything ATI in it. |
